Donald Satz wrote (March 8, 2004):
This 2-CD set of Bach's organ music performed by Dame Gillian Weir could be just the ticket for those who have found Bach's organ music too demanding, dark, and severe. What Weir gives us is "Papa Bach" in all his warmth, tenderness, and understanding. Generally, I don't have much appreciation for Bach organ recordings that do not highlight the music's severity and tremendous power, but Weir's loving interpretations entirely remove those considerations.

The program revolves around Bach's German Organ Mass and also includes the Schubler Chorales and four other Bach organ pieces. Although I could list a few minor quibbles about the performances, as I did in my review on MusicWeb, the fact remains that you won't find another Bach organ recording that mines Bach's gentle ways as effectively as Weir. She is a superb artist, and the set is highly recommended.
