Spanish Translations of the Cantatas
(January 14, 2003)

To all Spanish-speaking members of the BCML,

I wanted to bring to your attention that I have started to add Spanish translations of the cantatas to the Bach Cantatas Website. The translator is José Mª Pajares Box and so far he sent me translations of Cantatas BWV 1 to BWV 4.

There are links to these translations from the following page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/IndexTexts.htm
and from the pages of the relevant cantatas.

According to my personal experience with translating about 150 cantatas to Hebrew, I know how important it is to understand the text of the cantatas for greater enjoyment from the music Bach set to it, even if it difficult for you to identify with some of the religious message of the text. I hope you will find the translations useful.

I would like to see more translations of the cantatas to other languages. What about French, Portuguese, Danish, etc? I shall gladly add such translations to the Website.

Bach Cantatas Website – General Topics & Books Sections
(January 16, 2003):

The General Topics Section of the Bach Cantatas Website has been largely revised and updated. It now includes the messages sent to the BCML, BRML during the last three years (and also some some from other lists), which are connected to Bach's cantatas & other vocal works, but not related to a specific work and/or a specific performer.

The index page to the General Topics section is located at:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/index.htm

The most popular topics are (not surprisingly) HIP (with 7 pages) and OVPP (8 pages).

The Reviews and Discussions of Books (which were part of the General Topics Section) are now compiled into a separate section. See:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Books/index.htm.

Thanks you all for your contribution, and enjoy the reading,

Bach Cantatas Website – Adding some music?
(January 22, 2003)

For quite some time I consider adding a section of music examples to the Bach Cantatas Website. The last discussion of the anonymous tenor singer in the music example from Cantata BWV 78 convinced me that it is about the time to give a push to this idea. Three major problems are confronting me from carrying it out.

a. Legal Rights: AFAIK, placing examples from a recording on a Website needs permission from the owner of the rights to the recordings. I wrote to couple of record labels asking for their permission. Those who were kind enough to answer gave me the permission to put examples of up to 30 seconds or one minute (according to law in the country where the label is located). This will enable to put only short recitatives or chorales, but we are interested in complete arias or choruses, aren’t we? Are there any recordings that are in the public domain?

B. Space: The Bach Cantatas Website is located on a very reliable server of an American ISP. The size of the Website is now about 250 MB, for which I have to pay on a monthly basis. Now, files of music examples demand about 1 to 5 MB, and that means that there is not enough room for many of them. I can expand the disk space of the Website, but then it will become quite expansive. Is there any other reasonable solution you have in mind?

C. Time: Preparing music files requires a lot of time for scrapping the LP’s or CD’s. I am dedicated already a lot of time maintaining the Website, adding material, updating existing material, improving visuality, etc. Any help from the members by sending me music files they prepared would be most appreciated.

A trial page of this idea can be found at:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Mus/index.htm

There are links to this page from the lower left side of the Home Page:

and from the Left Menu (under Navigation Option):

Waiting for your answers,

The Bach Cantatas Website crossed the line of 100,000 visits
(January 23, 2003)

Last night I have noticed that the number of visits at the Bach Cantatas Website has just crossed the line of 100,000 visits since it was launched in its current form and address on December 30, 2000.

The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) is located at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com
This a comprehensive site covering all aspects of J.S. Bach's cantatas and his other vocal works. It contains discussions and detailed discographies of each cantata and other vocal works, performers and general topics. The site also includes texts and translations, scores, music examples, articles and interviews, and short biographies of more than 1,300 performers of Bach vocal works (singers, conductors, vocal and instrumental groups). There are also other relevant resources such as a discussion of the Lutheran church year, reviews and discussions of Bach’s non-vocal works, terms and abbreviations, hundreds of links to other relevant resources. The site is an international collective project, being compiled from various postings about the subject, most of which have been sent to the Bach Cantatas Mailing List (BCML).

I would like to use this opportunity to thank the numerous contributors to the discussions in the BCML, BRML, Bach_Cantatas ML and some other lists, whose messages are compiled into the pages of the Bach Cantatas Website. Their names are mentioned accordingly above each quoted message. I would also like to thank the many Bach lovers who have sent me material to be included in the BCW, such as articles, translation of the cantatas’ texts, details of recordings, short biographies, photos, links to other sites, etc. Their names are mentioned accordingly in the relevant pages.

Three of them deserve special gratitude

A. Armagan Ekici: Only a short while ago I found out who put the seed from which the Bach Cantatas Website has been developed. In the discussion of Harnoncourt I found the following message from him, sent to the BCML on April 12, 2000:
“Let's get on with real business: I wish that Aryeh's reviews of cantata recordings --most passionate and informed analysis I have ever seen, professional or amateur-- get published in an organized way rather than disappearing into the ether. Would Aryeh be interested in such a project? …Any ideas on cross-referencing, indexing these etc.?”

B. Simon Crouch (of the valuable Website Listener’s Guide to the Bach Cantatas): Who was very kind to host the Bach Cantatas Website in its initial phase.

C. Kirk McElhearn: Who formed and manages the BCML and the BRML.

I am encouraged by the positive feedback the BCW is getting from all over the world. Many of the feedback messages can be read in the following pages:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/About-2000.htm
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/About-2001.htm
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/About-2002.htm
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/About-2003.htm

I continue to look forward to receiving your comments (corrections, suggestions, improvements, etc.) about the Website. The instructions how to send me comments, appear in the following page: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/How.htm

I wish you all another Great and Happy Bach Year,

Bach Cantatas Website – Non-Vocal Works Section revised
(January 28, 2003)
The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) is aiming at the Sisyphean mission (in the positive sense) of completeness regarding the Bach Cantatas and Bach’s Other Vocal Works. This target means covering every possible aspect of the works: recordings, text & translations (to as many las possible), scores, references, commentary, short biographies of performers, articles, terms, and what I consider as the most important part: systematic discussions of the works and their recordings, performers, books, general topics related to the subject, etc.

Although Bach’s non-vocal works do not form a part of this goal, I included in the BCW a special section dedicated to them, as a service to the growing international community of Bach’s music lovers. In this section you can find reviews of individual recordings as well as comprehensive comparative reviews. Most of the reviews are by the unfatiguable and always illuminating Donald Satz, but the section includes also important reviews by Kirk McElhearn, Bradley Lehman and others. In some cases a recording has multiple reviews; in others I added as an addendum some of the feedback to the review. In that way the readers can have more than one opinion and get broader view of the recording.

The Section of Reviews of Bach's Non-Vocal Works at the BCW has been largely revised and updated lately. See:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NonVocal/index.htm

The major changes are:
a. I have added all the reviews I could find sent to the BRML, Classical Moderated List and others during the last three years (in few cases, even earlier), including the most recent ones.
b. Photos of the CD's were added, and details of each recording were completed (unless I could not find them).
c. I added links at the bottom of each review to:
- Other reviews of recordings of the same work.
- Other reviews of recordings by the same performer(c).
- The main pages of the BCW.
d. I added index of the reviews by performers (alphabetical). See:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NVP/index.htm

I hope you will find the revised section useful. If you have any corrections and/or additions to the data of the recordings in this section, or suggestions for improvements, please send me a message. The guidelines how to contribute to the BCW are described in the page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/How.htm

If you want to contribute a review of a recording of Bach’s non-vocal works, the best place to send it to is the BRML. In due time I shall add it to this section.

French Translations of the Cantatas
(February 8, 2003)

To all French-speaking members of the BCML,

I am glad to bring to your attention that I have started to add French translations of the cantatas to the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW). The translator is Jean-Pierre Grivois and so far he sent me translations of Cantatas BWV 1 to BWV 30 (excluding the Non-Bach cantata BWV 15). The rest of the sacred cantatas will be added to the BCW in the forthcoming months.

There are links to these translations from the following page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/IndexTexts.htm (markes as: Fre-4)
I intend also to add links from the pages of the relevant cantatas.

I am sincerely grateful to Jean-Pierre Grivois, who chose the BCW to host his translations. He has been working on his translations during the last 15 years, using a Note to Note format. Here is his explanation:

“The German text, and a note by note translation in French on the same document, allows the non-German to understand the symbolic system contained in each word or in each sentence.

The translation maintains the meter of the original text and, as often as possible, the placement of words which are featured with special affect in the music.

This sometimes requires abandoning normal word order and the contraction of syllables. It means that the translation should be followed while listening to the cantata and, if possible, reading the partition.”

According to my personal experience with translating more than 150 cantatas into Hebrew, I know how important it is to understand the text of the cantatas for greater enjoyment from the music Bach set to it, even if it difficult for you to identify with some of the religious message of the text. I hope you will find the translations useful.

Translations of the Bach Cantatas into other languages continue to be added to the BCW regularly. The major contributors are: Francis Browne (English), José Mª Pajares Box (Spanish), Francisco López Hernández (Spanish), Rodrigo Maffei Libonati (Portuguese), and me (Hebrew). From time to time there are contributions from Paul H. Farseth (English) and Dick Wursten (Dutch).

I would like to see more translations of the cantatas to other languages. What about Italian, Russian, Japanese, Danish, etc? I shall gladly add such translations to the BCW.

Bach Cantatas Website - Search Improvement
(February 15, 2003)

I have noticed that many members are using the Search facility of the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) quite extensively. This option appears at the Home Page (under J.S. Bach’s photo) and also at the bottom (links area) of each page of the BCW. The search engine is supplied by FreeFind, which spiders the BCW at least once a week and updates its index accordingly.

FreeFind now supports Boolean searching and three types of Phrase Search!

By default the search engine tries to locate pages that have exact matches for all of the words entered in your search query. If that fails, it then tries to locate pages that contain any words in your search query. If that happens a short message is displayed at the top of the search results indicating this has been done.

In addition, there are several ways to modify the default search behaviour.

  1. phrase search
The search engine supports three types of phrase search.

    • To match an exact phrase, use quotes around the phrase
      Example: "free search engine"
    • To match a near (within a couple of words) phrase, use square brackets [around the words]
      Example: [free search engine]
    • To match a far (within several words) phrase, use braces { around the words }
      Example: {free search engine}

  1. + and - qualifiers
If you prepend a word with + that word is required to be on the page.
If you prepend a word with - that word is required to not be on the page.
    Example: +always -never
  2. * wildcard
If a query word ends with a * all words on a page which start the same way as that query word will match.
    Example: gift*
  3. ? wildcard
If a query word contains a ? any character will match that position.
    Example: b?g
  4. Boolean search
You can use the following Boolean operators in your search: AND, OR, NOT. These operators MUST be in capital letters.
Example: (contact AND us) OR (about AND us)

All of these techniques can be combined: +alway* -ne??r*

These search tips appear also on the search results page.

Enjoy your searching,

Translations – Major Updates
(March 21, 2003)

On the occasion of J.S. Bach's 318th Birthday, I have a present for the community of his lovers:

a. Today I have finished adding to the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) all the French translations of the Sacred Cantatas, made by Jean-Pierre Grivois in Note to Note format.

b. I have also finished translating all the Sacred Cantatas into Hebrew.

c. I have also added Index Pages by BWV Number, Title and Event to all the translations hosted in the BCW.

You can find them all through the page: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/IndexTexts.htm

Bach Cantatas Website – Temporary unavailability
(April, 5, 2003)

Right now I am transferring the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) from its current host to a new one. The reason for the change is simple: the new host has much more space for a much lower cost. The extra space means better performance and also the option to expand the BCW with more material, especially music examples.

I left the domain name without change, means: http://www.bach-cantatas.com
and informed the registrar about the change of the host. Although I left both the old host and the new host active, the change might cause temporary unavailability of the BCW. Over the next few days, DNS servers all athe Internet will update themselves with the new host of the BCW. Once that happens, you will be able to access the BCW without any problem. You do not have to change anything in your bookmarks or links which point to the BCW. The only thing you need is some patience.

You are able to identify that you are working with the BCW in its new host by looking at the lower right corner of the Home Page. If you find there NEW SERVER, it means that you are looking at the BCW in its new host.

If after April 7, 2003 you still have problem accessing the BCW or any of its about 3,600 pages and 8,000 pictures, please inform me right away!

Thanks for your patience and enjoy,

Bach Cantatas Website – Scores
(April 7, 2003)

The transferring of the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) to its new host server has been finished. As I informed you in a previous post, you do not have to change anything. Just use the familiar bookmarks and links and they will direct you to the BCW at its new home. You will be able to identify that you are working with the new host by looking at the lower right corner of the Home Page: http://www.bach-cantatas.com
where it is written in bold letters NEW SERVER. If you still have any problem accessing the BCW or any of its many pages, please inform me right away.

The new host server means better performance and much more space. The first step I did after finishing transferring all the pages from the 'old' host and updating the relevant pages with the last correspondence, was uploading the PDF files of the cantata scores. These files, prepared by Yu Chao, were hosted on a Chinese server (actually they are still there). This server has had problems of unavailability, missing pages, etc. Yu suggested to me in his generosity to upload the PDF files to the BCW, but until I moved the BCW to the new server, this was not possible. Now you have them all in the BCW.
Look at the page: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Scores/index.htm
and continue from there. In due time I intend also updating the cantata pages accordingly.

If you have ideas for improvements, corrections, etc., please let me know.

Enjoy and thank you all,

Text and translations of chorales
(April 26, 2003

Notes and commentaries on the cantatas often refer to chorales (German hymns) used as the basis for the text of some of the cantatas. It is not always easy to find complete versions of these texts and if there are English translations they are designed to be sung and so are often inaccurate.

With Aryeh's kind help I have therefore begun to add to the website texts and translations of the chorales used as the basis for some cantatas and also the Latin hymns on which some chorales are based. These can be found at:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Texts/IndexTexts-Chorales-Title.htm

For future cantatas chosen for the weekly discussion my intention will be to translate both the cantata text and , where appropriate, the chorale . Corrections and suggestions for improvements are very welcome and much appreciated . To avoid filling the list with non-musical matters, it would be better to do this offlist ( brorimbach@aol.com )

Profiles of Members of the BCML & BRML
(May 5, 2003)

I have been thinking for quite some time of an idea, when Kirk sent the message below earlier today:
"I sometimes wish we could have a gallery of photos of the frequent posters - > it makes a difference when you know what the person you write to looks like. As it is, everyone looks like just plain lines of text..."

What do you think of the idea of putting a page (or pages) in the Bach Cantatas Website dedicated to the members of the BCML and the BRML. For each member the following information will be presented: photo, name, occupation, country, member of the Bach List since.

Some of us are members of at list one of the Bach Lists for more than three years now; others are relatively newcomers, and both lists are still growing. We are corresponding on a daily basis and we know almost nothing on each other. So, such a page (pages) will allow us to have better acquaintance with each other. I know that this is uncommon idea among mailing lists, but I believe that the BCML and the BRML are special and unique phenomenon anyhow.

As a trial, I put up a page with profiles of two members:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/Members-Profiles.htm

I would like all the members of both lists, both contributors and lurkers, to appear in this page(s). But it is up to each member to decide whether he/she wants to participate. If you like the idea, please send me (to my personal e-mail address) the relevant details and a photo (jpg/jpeg format, 180x235 pixels).

New Section in the Bach Cantatas Website - Librettists & Hymn-Writers
(May 27, 2003)

I believe that most members of the BCML/BRML are already aware of the connection between text and music in Bach's vocal works. After finishing translating all the Bach Cantatas into Hebrew, I thought that it is about the time to pay attention to those hidden figures, the poets who supplied the hymns and the libretti to which Bach set his sublime music.

I have been looking in vain for some information about the most popular of them all, the guy whose name appear as the librettist of most of Bach Cantatas, the legendary Mr. Anon, but could not find anything meaningful. Therefore I decided to skip him, hoping that nobody will be angry with me of dismissing this important figure.

But I listed all the others I had found. In the page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Lib/index.htm
you can find an index where the poets are listed alphabetically.

In the second column there are three options:
a. The title Librettist/Hymn-Writer in bold letters: means that there is a biography of this poet in the BCW. Pressing the link of his name will lead you to this biography.
b. The title Librettist/Hymn-Writer in regular (non-bold) letters: means that only birth and death years are available, but not a biography. Pressing the link of his name will lead you to these details.
c. Nothing appears in this column: means that no information is available (yet) [in this case, pressing the link of the poet's name will give you an error message].

In the third column there is a list of all Bach's vocal works in which a text by the poet has been used. A question mark means that the authorship is doubtful.

The page of each biography includes:
a. Date and place of Birth/Death.
b. Body of the biography.
c. List of Bach's works in which the text of the poet has been used.
d. List of chorales by this poet (only if they are already included in the BCW). Francis Browne contributes the text & English translation of the chorales.
e. Links to other sites.

In time I intend adding links to these biographies from the headers of each cantata page (the orange part). In that way you will be able to learn something about the poet, as well as finding easily in which other Bach's works his/her text was used.

I found about 160 poets, the biographies of 52 of them are already included in the BCW. Since many of the BCML/BRML members are Christians, it is most likely that they have access to resources that are not at my disposal. I would appreciate any help you can give me in building this section of the BCW, by adding missing biographies, expanding existing ones, adding pictures of the poets, correcting details, etc.

If you are willing to contribute to this section of the BCW, or to any other of its parts, please send it to my personal e-mail address: oron-a@inter.net.il
(and not through the BCML/BRML).

BGA Scores – a Major Addition to the Bach Cantatas Website
(July 2, 2003)

I have just finished uploading all the scores of Bach’s vocal works BWV 1-523 from the BGA Edition (Bach Gesamtausgabe, the first complete edition of J.S. Bach works, published in Leipzig 1851-1899) into the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW). You have now available online the complete and full scores of Bach’s vocal works (Cantatas, Motets, Masses, Passions, Magnificat, Chorales, Lieder, etc), including even works, which due later research have been proved to being composed not by J.S. Bach. Please notice that this is the BGA (or BG) Edition, the copyright on which has expired. That also means that the latter additions and updates to the BWV included in the NBA Edition are missing. Anyhow, AFAIK, the NBA is not available in digitized form and is still protected by copyright. It has been a painstaking job extracting the files for each vocal work from the BGA volumes. I hope I did it right, but if you find any mistake, please inform me.

You can find them all through the following page of the Bach Cantatas Website:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Scores/index.htm
To view or print the PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format) files, please use Adobe Acrobat Reader.

In the same page you have also links to the reduced Vocal & Piano Scores of the Sacred Cantatas BWV 1-199. Please notice that the links in the Cantata pages (the orange area at the header of each Cantata page) have not yet been updated to include links to the new PDF files of the scores. I need some time to accomplish this task, but eventually it will be done.

The files are extracted from the complete volumes of the edition by Peters, Leipzig, available in a bound form at Leipzig Municipal Library. The complete BGA Edition in digitalized form with complete texts, musical notes, contents and facsimiles of about 16,800 pages, can be bought from: www.bachwerke.de

Bach Cantatas & Other Vocal Works according to Performance Dates
(August 11, 2003)

Following requests from members of the Bach Lists and occasional visitors at the Bach Cantatas Website, I added a page which lists all Bach's Vocal Works (Cantatas, Oratorios, Motets, Passions, etc.) according to their performance date by J.S. Bach. That means that works which were performed by Bach several times have duplicate entries in the list.
See: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Date.htm

From the line of each work there is a link to its page at the Bach Cantatas
Website.
There are links to this page from the following pages:
Recordings & Discussions of Cantatas: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/IndexBWV.htm
Recordings & Discussions of Other Vocal Works: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Vocal/index.htm
Lutheran Church Year: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/LCY/index.htm

I hope you will find the list useful.
If you find any inaccuracies or missing data in this page, do not hesitate to inform me right away.

Italian, Russian & Japanese (and more) Translations needed
(August 26, 2003):

You know that the main goal of the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) is to help spreading the J.S. Bach's message worldwide. One of the tools making it possible are translations of his vocal works, especially the cantatas, available online in as many languages as possible.

The BCW includes links to every translation of Bach's vocal works I have managed to find over the web. Furthermore, several good people have contributed (and still continue doing so) translations to various languages hosted at the BCW. The list of contributors includes, among others: Francis Browne and Paul Farseth (English); Jean-Pierre Grivois (French); Rodrigo Maffei Libonati (Portuguese); Jose Pajares Box, Francisco Lopez Hernandez and Lorenzo Conejo (Spanish); Dick Wursten (Dutch), Galia Regev, Irit Schoenhorn and Aryeh Oron (Hebrew). The gate to the Original German (sometimes Latin) Texts and their Translations is located at the page: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/IndexTexts.htm

Some important languages, such as Italian, Russian and Japanese, are missing. I would appreciate any volunteer who wants to contribute translations to these and to any other language. I shall be happy to host them all at the BCW.

Bach Vocal Concerts Mailing List
(August 31, 2003)

I opened a new mailing list, named BachVocalConcerts Mailing List [Bach-VCML]. The only goal of the Bach-VCML is exchanging information about schedule of concerts in which Bach's Vocal works are performed.

The Schedule of Concerts appears in the following page of the Bach Cantatas Website: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Concerts/index.htm
There is a link to this page from the Home Page of the Bach Cantatas Website: http://www.bach-cantatas.com
(lower right corner)

If you have information about planned concerts of Bach's Vocal Works not listed in this page, please subscribe to Bach-VCML by sending the message: Bach-VCML-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

After the subscription, please post a message to Bach-VCML with the following details (for each concert):
- Date
- Location
- Works (BWV Numbers)
- Performers
- Website (if applicable to the concert)
- Source of information

Schedule of Concerts of Bach’s vocal works
(September 20, 2003)

During the last three weeks I have a compiled a worldwide Schedule of Concerts of Bach’s vocal works. Due the enormous number of concerts, the Schedule is divided into three lists:
Year 2003: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Concerts/Concert-2003.htm
Year 2004: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Concerts/Concert-2004.htm
Year 2005: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Concerts/Concert-2005.htm

The lists are arranged (more or less) by date, country, (state), city, venue.

The lists have been compiled from various websites, most of them through extensive research and some with the help of members of the Bach-VCML, a special mailing list whose only goal is exchanging information about scheduled concerts of Bach's vocal works. I also wrote to every website, from which the information was collected, asking for confirmation of the details. Many of them answered me and helped making the lists even more complete and accurate.

About 1,000 concerts are already listed. Nevertheless, Iam quite sure that many more have slipped away, either because I have failed to find them or because the performers do not have a website.

I would appreciate any help, which will make the lists even more comprehensive.

Additions/changes/corrections to the schedule of concerts

If you have information about planned concerts of Bach’s Vocal Works not listed in these pages, or if you have any correction, change, or addition to the list of concerts, please subscribe to BachVocalConcerts Mailing List [Bach-VCML]: mailto:Bach-VCML-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
and post the information.

Another option is posting a message directly to me: oron-a@inter.net.il

In your message please include the following details for each concert:

1. Date
2. Location (venue, town, state/region, country)
3. Works (BWV Numbers)
4. Performers (at least conductor, vocal/choral & instrumental ensembles)
5. Website (if applicable to the concert)
