Alexander Wilhem Gottschalg (Composer, Arranger)

Born: February 12, 1827 - Mechelroda, Thuringia, Germany.
Died: May 31, 1908

The important Thuringian Kantor, organist and a composer, Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg, studied at the Lehrerseminar (teacher seminar) in Weimar with Johann Gottlob Töpfer. Then he received instruction from the Weimar's Hofkapellmeister André Hippolyte Chélard and from Franz Liszt. Gottschalg was highly esteemed by F. Liszt.

From 1847 to 1870 Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg was Kantor in Tiefurt, afterwards court organist in Weimar, as well as seminar teacher and main organ examiner there. In addition he taught from 1874 to 1903 at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt. His and F. Liszt's hopes, that he would become Töpfer's successor as organist at the Weimar town church, were not fulfilled.
