Erich Doflein (Arranger)

Born: August 7, 1900 - Munich, Germany
Died: October 29, 1977 - Kirchzarten, Germany

The German musicologist, Erich Doflein, received training in music from Auerbach, Kaminski, and Praetorius, in musicology from Schneider, in art history from Pinder, and in philosophy from Honigswald in Breslau and Munich. In 1924 he received his Ph.D. at the University of Breslau with the dissertation Über Gestalt und Stil in der Musik. He then completed his studies with Gurlitt and Erpf in Freiburg im Breisgau.

In 1928 Erich Doflein helped to found an institute for private music teachers in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he taught. He then taught at the Breslau music school (1941-1944). In 1947 he became a professor and acting director of the newly-founded Freiburg im Breisgau Hochschule für Musik, remaining on its faculty until 1965. In 1948 he also helped to found the Institut für Neue Musik und Musikerzeihung in Bayreuth, which later removed to Darmstadt, where he served as its president from 1956 to 1960.

Erich Doflein was especially active in the field of music pedagogy. With his wife Elma, he published the valuable Geigenschulwerk (Mainz, 1931; 2nd edition, 1951; English translation, 1957).
