Heinz Wunderlich (Conductor, Organ, Harpsichord)

Born: December 21, 1919 - Leipzig, Germany

The noted German organist, choral conductor, and pedagogue, Heinz Wunderlich, studied organ with Karl Straube in Leipzig from 1935 to 1941. Then he studied composition and conducting with J.N David.

From 1943 to 1958 Heinz Wunderlich held several organ and choral conducting posts. Between 1947 and 1958 he also taught at the Halle Staatliche Hochschule für Musik. From 1958 to 1982 he was Kirchenmusikdirektor at St. Jacobi in Hamburg, where his concerts of choral music by the German masters and of the organ works of Reger, as well as his restoration of the famous Arp Schnitger organ, received great acclaim. In 1978 he toured the USA with his choir.

As professor of organ at Hamburg Hochschule für Musik from 1974, Heinz Wunderlich attracted students from many countries.
