The Australian-born tenor, Scott Wellstead (Scott Robert Shaw), has been performing as a professional singer since childhood. He began his career and musical education in the British choral tradition, singing as a boy soprano in the St George’s Cathedral Perth choir, where he sang the age of 8 for 5 years. After his voice change he attended the McDonald College of the Performing Arts in Sydney, where he studied music and acting in the Stanislawksy/Laban tradition, and was awarded a full scholarship for Excellence in Performance. He then attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Studies and was given the Most Exceptional Contribution to the Arts award from Wesley College, University of Sydney.
Upon moving to London in 2002, Scott Wellstead continued his studies with with Mary King, his teacher at the English National Opera’s Baylis Programme for young performers. During that time he performed regularly in recitals and sang various operatic roles, such as Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Vašek in The Bartered Bride and Remendado in Georges Bizet's Carmen opera companies in both the UK and France. After moving to the Netherlands in 2008, he completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where he studied Early Music and Classical Singing.
Scott Wellstead has been performing as a professional singer for more than twenty years. The repertoire he performs with ranges from opera, oratorio and song recital to Renaissance polyphony and contemporary choral repertoire. He has performed many times in Australia, the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Now based in Düsseldorf, is regularly engaged as a soloist in The Netherlands and Germany, with a particular focus on J.S. Bach oratorio and Evangelist roles in the Passions and the Christmas Oratorio, but also George Frideric Handel's Messiah and Benjamin Britten's St Nicolas Cantata.
Scott Wellstead is the artistic director and vocalist of Conceptus (since November 2021), a multi-disciplinary ensemble dedicated to recording and performing great works and song cycles from the 19th and 20th centuries. He has also been a member of Holst Singers (Director: Stephen Layton), Europa Chor Akademie (Director: Joshard Daus), Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven), Egidius Kwartet, Bischoff Ensemble, Laurens Collegium Rotterdam (Director: Wiecher Mandemaker) and De Utrechtse Speel. Currently he is a member of Chorus Musicus Köln (Director: Christoph Spering). |
