Christoph-Andreas Schäfer (Choral Conductor, Organ)

Born: Wertheim am Main, Germany

The German conductor and organist, Christoph-Andreas Schäfer, studied church music in Heidelberg and Düsseldorf, completing his state exams.

From 1986 to 1990, Christoph-Andreas Schäfer was assistant to KMD Professor Oskar Gottlieb Blarr at the Neanderkirche in Düsseldorf. In his first professional work took he was Kantor at Walsrode in Lüneburg Heide from 1991 to 1994; then he was a church musician at Christuskirche in Freiburg from 1994 to 1998. In addition to his activity as organist, he is working intensely as a choral conductor with numerous oratorio performances and premieres. The pre-occupation with contemporary music and the unusual church music programmes with music from the realm of jazz and pop are among his special focus.

He directs the Heidelberger Studentenkantorei (student choir), founded the Heidelberger Kinderkantorei (boy choir) and the Junge-Kantorei-Heiliggeist and is the artistic director of the weekly series "Stunde der Kirchenmusik" (Hour of Church Music). He is also a lecturer at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg and artistic director of Freiburger Kinder- und Jugendkantorei. As an organist and choral conductor he has given concerts in Norway, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Belarus, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, France, Egypt and the USA.
