Arnaud Richard (Bass-Baritone)

Born: July 5, 1973 - France

The French bass-baritone, Arnaud Richard,. was awarded the highest distinction on graduating from the CNR of Caen. He then continued his studies under Alain Buet. In 2006 he won second prize in the international competition of Marmande for the category French Song.

International breakthrough came in February 2010, singing Aeneas in Purcell''s Dido and Aeneas with the Ensemble Musicaeterna under the baton of renowned conductor Teodor Currentzis, with whom he recorded at the same occasion Mozart’s Requiem (for the label Alpha Productions).

Arnaud Richard has sung under conductors such as : Vincent Dumestre, Pierre Cao, William Christie, David Stern, Luciano Acocella, Sylvain Cambreling, Xavier Ricour, Rani Calderon, Teodor Currentzis, Daniele Callegari and François-Xavier Roth. On stage he had the opportunity to work together with renowned stage directors such as Olivier Py, Keith Warner, Benjamin Lazar, Andreas Homoki and Jossi Wieler.

During the past seasons Arnaud Richard also appeared as Alquif and Ardan-Canile in Amadis by Lully in Avignon, Uberto in Serva Padrone by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Fiorello in Barbiere di Siviglia in Rouen, Pietro in Simon Boccanegra in Strasbourg, Draco and Mars in Cadmus and Hermione by Lully at Opéra Comique de Paris, Maurevert in Les Huguenots at ONR Strasbourg, Il Marchese D’Obigny in La Traviata in Rouen and Versailles.

Arnaud Richard has performed as a soloist with: Les Musiciens du Paradis (Director: Alain Buet), Ensemble Pierre Robert (Director: Frédéric Désenclos), Ensemble Pygmalion (Director: Raphaël Pichon), Le Poème Harmonique (Director: Vincent Dumestre), Ausonia (Directors: Mira Glodeanu and Frédérick Haas), Les Paladins (Director: Jérôme Correas), La Simphonie du Marais (Director: Hugo Reyne), Il Seminario Musicale (Director: Gérard Lesne), La Fenice (Director: Jean Tubéry)…In concert he has performed such works as the Cantata BWV 8, the St. John Passion (BWV 245) and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach, the Requiems by Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé and W.A. Mozart, Johannes BrahmsEin deutsches Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah and L.v. Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. With Les Arts Florissants led by William Christie he participated in Caecilia Virgo & Martyr by M.A. Charpentier at Aix-en-Provence Festival (2012). In addition he gives recitals with mainly German Lieder and French songs, accompanied by pianist Xavier Leroux.

Amongst his most recent parts Nicolas in L’Ecume des jours by Edison Denisov at the Opera House of Stuttgart (new production led by Sylvain Cambreling and directed by Jossi Wieler, December 2012). With Les Arts Florissants led by William Christie he partipated in Atys by Lully and in Aix-en-Provence, Versailles New-York and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, (2011) and David et Jonathas by M.A. Charpentier first as Guerrier (at Aix-Festival) than as Saül (one of the leading roles) at Opéra Comique (Paris) and in Théâtre de Caen January/February 2013). The Company Opera Fuoco invited him to participate in concerts with works by the composers Dauvergne and Gluck (led by David Stern) at the Opera House of Versailles. Salle Gaveau (Paris) saw him appearing with Le Choeur Symphonique de Paris led by Xavier Ricour in Das Paradies und die Peri by Robert Schumann. Eventually he sang the bass-baritone part in the Grande Messe des Morts by François-Joseph Gossec in a performance by Les Siècles, led by te renowned French conductor François-Xavier Roth at the « Royal Chapel » at Versailles.

Future engagements will include two productions within the famous NTR-series (Hilversum) L’Enfance du Christ by Berlioz and Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher by Arthur Honegger together with the Radio Philharmonie Orchestra (Netherlands) and a concert tour with Brussels Philharmonic led by Richard Egarr (J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Bass arias). On stage Arnaud Richard will return to Stuttgart for l’Ecume des Jours’ revival and take part in Le Roi Arthus by Chausson at Opéra national du Rhin (Strasbourg). Amongst his other important projects: the stage production of two of Rameau’s ballet music : La Naissance d’Osiris & Daphnis & Eglé together with Les Arts Florissants under the baton of William Christie.

On CD Arnaud Richard has recorded : Le vœu de Louis XIII with the Pages et les Chantres du Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles and Olivier Schneebeli (recording was awarded with the Charles Cros-Prize) ; Les grands Motets by Pierre Robert; Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme after Molière and Lully on DVD (directed by Vincent Dumestre) ; Soleils Baroques with Les Paladins and Jérôme Correas; Cadmus et Hermione by Lully with Le Poème Harmonique; a CD recording of airs for bass and/or soprano from Zoroastre and Zaïs by Rameau with the ensemble Ausonia with Frédérick Haas and Mira Glodeanu and Mozart’s Requiem (led by Teodor Currentzis, on the CD-label Alpha).
