Sandra Moon (Soprano)

Born: Dayton, Ohio, USA

The American soprano, Sandra Moon, received her musical training from the Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music, as well as being a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Young Artist program.

Sandra Moon made her professional debut in the role of Frasquita in Ponnelle's staging of Carmen with Plácido Domingo singing Don José at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Her first engagement in Europe was at the Stadttheater in Aachen where she sang such roles as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Pamina, Susanna, Oscar and Norina. From 1992 to 1997 Sandra was engaged at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe where her repertoire was extended to such roles as Mimì, Liù, Manon, Donna Anna, Adina and Fiordiligi. Her extensive repertoire has lead her to other opera houses in Europe including Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dresden, Linz, Munich, Bonn and Leipzig.

Sandra Moon's focus has often turned to the Baroque repertoire. She has taken part in such festivals as the Dresden Music Festival, Karlsruhe Händel Festival and the Halle Händel Festival. In 1996 she was named "Best Singer of the Year" by the critic's choice in the Opernwelt yearbook for her work in Naumann's Acis et Galateé at the Dresden Festival. She returned to Dresden in June 2001 for another Naumann work, Cora, under the baton of baroque specialist Rene Jacobs.

While living in Europe, Sandra Moon has had the opportunity to return to the USA to perform with many opera houses: with New York City Opera she has performed Pamina in Die Zauberflöte and Rose in Street Scene; Musetta and Antonia in Les contes d'Hoffmann with Florentine Opera, Marzelline in Fidelio with Glimmerglass Opera and at Opera Columbus, where she sang the role of the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. With the Charleston Symphony Orchestra she sang W.A. Mozart's Requiem and in February 2001, the Strauss Four Last Songs.

Recent engagements: Sandra made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1997 in the role of Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos with James Levine conducting. Since then she has sung Cleopatra in George Frideric Handel's Giulio Ceasare, Flower Maiden in Parsifal and Zdenka next to Renee Fleming in Strauss' Arabella. At Munich's Gärtnerplatz Theater Sabdra Moon sings Violetta, Mimì, Micaëla, Antonia, Pamina, Anne Trulove, Konstanze and Fiordiligi. In the USA she sang her first Gilda with Cleveland Opera and returned to sing Cleopatra last December. In February 2003 Sandra Moon sang the soprano solo in L.v. Beethoven's C-Major Mass in Warsaw Poland with the Sinfonia Varsovia. She sang the title role of Lucia di Lamermoor with Portland Opera (April 2004) as well as Adina with Lake George Opera Festival (July 2004), Emilia in Cantone in Utica in Munich, Germany (October 2003), the Soprano Solo in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with Charleston Symphony (April 2004) as well as the above roles at the Gärtnerplatz Theater.
