Margarita Lilova (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: July 26, 1935 - Tscherwen Briag, Bulgaria

The Bulgarian mezzo-soprano, Margarita Lilova [Lilowa], studied in Sofia with Maria Zibulka and Michail Jankov.

Margarita Lilova made her debut at Varna Opera in 1959, as Maddalena in Rigoletto. She sang in Varna as the Countess in The Queen of Spades and Azucena. She made her Covent Garden and Vienna Staatsoper debuts in 1962 and 1963, as Amneris. She made guest appearances at the Paris Opera, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Teatro Col6n Buenos Aires; Cologne, Düsseldorf, Los Angeles, Berlin, Montreal and Moscow. She was a member of the Vienna Staatsoper from 1963, including tour of Japan 1986, as Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Annina (Der Rosenkavalier). She appeared at the Salzburg Festival from 1965 to 1967, as the Hostess in Boris Godunov, conducted by Herbert von Karajan; La Scala Milan 1973, as Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera, returned 1988, as Mary in Der fliegende Hollander. She also had many concert appearances and song recitals.

Recordings: Les Contes d'Hotfmann, Boris Godunov, Der Rosenkavalier, Bruckner Te Deum and Mass no 2 (Decca), Verdi-Messa da Requiem.
