The English tenor, Philip Langridge, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is one of the world's most distinguished singers, whose rare musical and dramatic qualities ensure that he is in constant demand on the operatic and concert platforms of Europe, America and Japan.
Philip Langridge appears on a regular basis with many of the world's leading opera companies and music festivals, in a wide repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to contemporary works. For example, he appeared as Oedipus Rex in Japan in a new production with Seiji Ozawa that won the 1994 Classical Music Award for best opera production, and in America at the New York Metropolitan where he sang his first Loge (Rheingold) with James Levine to great critical acclaim. His performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1993 of Nerone in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea with Nikolaus Harnoncourt was also highly praised. In fact, he has become a regular guest at Salzburg, singing Aron (James Levine), Idomeneo (Seiji Ozawa), From the House of the Dead (Claudio Abbado) and in 1994 Shuisky in Boris Godunov (Claudio Abbado).
Philip Langridge also appears regularly at La Scala, Milan, where he had sung Boris Godunov, The Rake's Progress, Wozzeck, Idomeneo, and at Covent Garden, where he had appeared in Boris Godunov, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges, Jenufa and Idomeneo.
Philip Langridge’s interpretations of major Britten roles have been given particularly high praise. He has sung Peter Grimes at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera, Aschenbach in Death in Venice for Scottish Opera and the ROH, Captain Vere in Billy Budd for Scottish Opera, ENO and Opera North, and Quint in The Turn of the Screw for ENO. Another composer with whose music he is closely associated in Janacek. He has performed Osud which was recorded by EMI with Charles Mackerras and The Makropulos Case at ENO, Jenufa at the ROH with Haitink and at Glyndebourne with Andrew Davis. He has appeared in the world premieres of Birtwistle's operas The Mask of Orpheus at ENO and The Second Mrs Kong at Glyndebourne.
In concert, Philip Langridge has sung with the major British orchestras and has performed frequently with the Berlin Philharmonic (Claudio Abbado, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa), Vienna Philharmonic (Claudio Abbado, Previn, Peter Neumann and James Levine), Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Ferdinand Leitner), Orchestre de Paris (Daniel Barenboim, Bychkov, Zubin Mehta), Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Colin Davis), Chicago Symphony (Daniel Barenboim, Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado, James Levine) and Boston Symphony (Previn and Seiji Ozawa).
Future stage appearances include Pelleas and Melisande at Netherlands Opera, Moses and Aron, Jenufa and Oedipus Rex at the Châtelet, Paris, Billy Budd and Rheingold at the Metropolitan, New York, Birtwistle's The Second Mrs Kong at the Glyndebourne Festival and Semele at the Royal Opera House. Philip Langridge was awarded the CBE In 1994. He is married to mezzo-soprano Ann Murray. He is a collector of watercolours. |
