Harmonie Universelle (Instrumental Ensemble)

Harmonie Universelle (USA)

Founded: 1984 - The Netherlands

About

Harmonie Universelle is a chamber music ensemble devoted to playing 17th and 18th century music on period instruments (especially involving flutes) and new music for the old instruments.

Harmonie Universelle is a chamber-music ensemble focused on the music of the 17th, 18th, and 20th century music for flute and harpsichord, played on historically-appropriate instruments, in styles of playing informed by study of those periods. The core ensemble is most often expanded to include another flute, violins, cello or viola-da-gamba, and vocalists.

History

Harmonie Universelle was established in 1984 by two American musicians then working and studying in the Netherlands. Since then it has shifted is base back to the USA. They have performed together at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the Boston Early Music Festival, in London (Burgh House, Fenton House, St. Martin-in-the-Fields), Amsterdam (Onze Leiver Heer op Zolder, Amsterdam Bijbelsmuseum, Museum Amstelkring, Begijnhofkerk), Paris ("Atelier" Series at the American Church), and throughout the American southeast. Harmonie Universelle was the first early-music ensemble to be awarded a residency through the NEA's "Chamber Music in Rural Residencies" in 1993-1994. They also perform new music for old instruments, and have twice given world-premier performances of new works for baroque-flute at the conventions of the National Flute Association.

Current Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Core Members: Daniel Pyle (organ, harpsichord, lautenwerk); Catherine Bull (historical flutes, recorder).

Harmonie Universelle (Germany)

Founded: Köln (Cologne), Germany

Passion and poetry, virtuosity and tenderness, consonance and dissonance: uniting these qualities is what shapes the unique artistic vision of Harmonie Universelle. This vision mirrors the ideal of the French scholar Marin Mersenne, and his portrayal of the world as a harmonious whole.

Harmonie Universelle brings together international musicians, in constellations ranging all the way from a chamber music duo to a large orchestra, in order to explore the vast repertoire of 17th and 18th century music. Leading the ensemble are German violinist Florian Deuter and Argentine violinist Mónica Waisman. Members come from Italy, Hungary, France, Austria, England, Holland, Switzerland, Portugal and Spain, as well as Japan, the USA, Canada, Colombia and Australia.

Since its creation, the ensemble has been a regular guest at leading music festivals and on concert stages throughout Europe, including the Utrecht Festival of Early Music, Bachfest Leipzig, Musikfest Bremen, Festival d'Ambronay, Festival de Música Antigua de Barcelona, Styriarte in Graz, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Versailles, Cologne Philharmonic, and many more.

The outstanding interpretations of Harmonie Universelle can be heard on CD recordings by the French label Eloquentia and the German label Accent, which have garnered numerous awards from the international press.

Since 2008, Harmonie Universelle produces its own concert series in Cologne and NRW, in which the ensemble regularly presents innovative new programs.
