Chorus Viennensis (Choir)

Founded: 1952 - Vienna, Austria

Chorus Viennensis was created in 1952 by Josef Schnitt, who was at that time director of Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys’ Choir) and rector of the castle chapel. Chorus Viennensis, is man choir, in which participate excluding former Wiener Sängerknaben boy singers. The conductors of the Chorus Viennensis were often also conductors of the Wiener Sängerknaben. Until 1963 Ferdinand Grossmann led the choir, which was taken over thereafter by Hans Gillesberger. Since 1997 Raoul Gehringer has been director/conductor of the Chorus Viennensis.

The repertoire of the choir covers works from various styles. Their preference applies to the works of Franz Schubert (they recorded for Philips his complete works for man choir) and that of contemporary composers such as Paul Hindemith, Anton Heiller, Kratochwil, Schiske and Planyavsky. A part of the choir forms the Choralschola of the Wiener Hofburg, which under Pater Hubert Dopf has been developed into a special ensemble for Gregorian singing.
