Martina Borst (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: 1957 - Aachen, Germany

The German mezzo-soprano, Martina Borst, studied at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt with Professor Elsa Cavelti and in Milan with Carla Castellani. She is a prize-winner of the VDMK competition.

Opera engagements led Martina Borst to the stages of Mannheim, Dortmund and Hannover, where she has appeared in a broad reprtoire from Orpheus to Octavian with conductors such M.A. Marelli, Ruth Berghaus, Nicolas Brieger, Willy Decker, and Nikolaus Lehnhoff. Guest appearances led her to theatres like the Deutsche Oper and the Staatsoper of Berlin, the Opera Houses of Bonn, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Munich, Parma, Geneva and Buenos Aires. In Vienna she sang Dorabella in a new production of Cosi fan tutte, noted from the ORF. She has worked with notable conductors like Lorin Maazel, Bruno Weil, Eliahu Inbal, James Conlon, Gary Bertini and Donald Runnicles.

Martina Borst participated in important festivals: at the Salzburg Festival, the Bregenz Festivals, the Festivals in Ludwigsburg and Schwetzingen, at the Bach Festival Munich, at the Schubertiade Vienna, the Dresden's Music Days, the Beethoven Festival Bonn and the Herbstlichen Music Days in Bad Urach. As a concert singer she has appeared with versatile repertoire up to the modern time many in important concert halls of Europe and has made music with conductors such as Frieder Bernius, Hartmut Haenchen, Peter Neumann, Thomas Hengelbrock, Michael Gielen, Hanns-Martin Schneidt and Bernhard Klee.

Numerous broadcast and CD productions document the artistic work of the Martina Borst: including Cosi fan tutte (conductor Wolfgang Gönnenwein), La Didone abbandonata by Jommelli ("Gramophone" award), E flat major Mass by F. Schubert (German record prize). She also feels closely connected with Lieder singing and gave Lieder recitals for example at the Hugo Wolf Society Stuttgart with Hartmut Höll and Eric Schneider, with the NDR Hannover and with the Classix Festival Braunschweig.
