Marco Bakker (Baritone)

Born: February 8, 1938 - Beverwijk, the Netherlands

The Dutch baritone, Jacob Marinus Baker, best known under the stage name Marco Bakker, graduated from the Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1965.

Marco Bakker made his debut with the opera written for him De droom (The Dream)' at the Holland Festival in 1965. His first big tour took place in 1973 in the USA, where he gave 18 concerts. In the Netherlands, he is known for his TV and radio appearances and in particular his New Year's concerts. He also played the role of Theo in the film Theo en Thea and the unmasking of the toes cheese empire.

Marco Bakker, after a previous marriage to Patricia Madden, married to actress Willeke van Ammelrooy. In October 1997 he came into the news because he was under the influence of alcohol had caused an accident on the parking deck of the Amsterdam Arena, in which a woman was killed. He was convicted in 1998 for this, lost his license for one year and was given the choice of a prison sentence of six months or 240 hours of community service. This had negative consequences for his image and career.

Marco Bakker presents a light classical radio program on Sunday morning at the regional broadcaster Radio M Utrecht. Due to the success in 2008, Baker again made a theater tour throughout the Netherlands with "The 3 Baritones" (Henk Poort, Ernst Daniël Smid, Marco Bakker), that began in December 2009 and ended at the Royal Carré Theatre in March 2010.
