Rodrigo del Pozo (Tenor)

Born: July 18, 1961 - Santiago, Chile

The Chilean tenor/male soprano, Rodrigo del Pozo Lira, studied singing and in addition guitar and lute at the Instituto de Música de la Universidad Católica de Chile (1981-1986). He moved to Europe after having won a scholarship and studied lute with Jakob Lindberg from 1990 to 1992. He studied singing in England with Nigel Rogers and later with David Mason. His voice type is the rare case of a true haute-contre/tenor altino.

In 1992 Rodrigo del Pozo made his debut in the opera L’Orfeo by Monteverdi at the Oslo Opera Festival (Norway), and in 1993 at the Boston Early Music Festival (USA). Since then he has performed mainly church music and secular music, in particular operas, of the Renaissance and Baroque era, where he sings alto parts with his chest voice, at least up to an eb'' (Eb5).

Rodrigo del Pozo has performed with the most outstanding early music ensembles in Europe and North America, including Canzona under Theresa Caudle, Concerto Palatino (Directors: Bruce Dickey & Charles Toet), Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (Director: Christophe Coin, Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh, Israel Camerata Orchestra Jerusalem under Avner Biron, the Harp Consort, The King's Consort (Director: Robert King), Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under René Jacobs, St. James Baroque Players under Ivor Bolton and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Director: Jeanne Lamon).

His engagements have further included Le bourgeois gentilhomme for the English Bach Festival, Pastore L’Orfeo with Tragicomedia under Stephen Stubbs at the Beaune Festival and the Festtage Alter Musik, Stuttgart, Arcetro Euridice (Peri) at the Drottningholm Theatre, Anacréon with Les Musiciens du Louvre under Marc Minkowski and Odes by Purcell and Blow at the Wratsilava Cantans Festival. Other performances include George Frideric Handel's Acis & Galatea on tour with the Gabrieli Consort, J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Salisbury Cathedral, music by Blow, Humphrey and Purcell with the New York Collegium, Acis and Galatea with The Early Opera Company, Le bourgeois gentilhomme and King Arthur with Les Arts Florissants, Monteverdi Vespers 1610 and W.A. Mozart's Requiem with Apollo's Fire, a Preatorius project with the Gabrieli Consort, The Fairy Queen with The King's Consort and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. In Holland, he regularly acts as an Evangelist and tenor at J.S. Bach's Passions at Easter. He has made numerous concert tours to Israel with The Israel Kibbutz Orchestra and other Israeli groups. With the English group Charivari Agreable he participated in the recording of a 17th century English music CD, in addition to regular concerts in England, Holland and the USA.

Recent engagements have included J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Rosario, Argentina under Manfredo Kraemer, J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) with Orquesta de Cámara de Chile and J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) in Sao Pablo, Brazil with Barockorchester Den Haag under Luís Otávio Santos and Purcell St. Cecilia’s Ode (1692) with New York Collegium under Andrew Parrott.

Currently Rodrigo del Pozo is the Head of Vocal Studies at Instituto de Música, Universidad Catolica de Chile. He is regularly invited to give master-classes and courses in Brazil at, “Oficina de Musica de Curitiba, Semanas de Musica Antiga da UFMG, Belo Horizonte and Encontro de Música Antiga de Recife/Olinda. He currently lives in Santiago, Chile.

Rodrigo del Pozo’s many recordings include credits for the record labels: Auvidis-Atrée, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion, Etcétera, Signum and Teldec as well as engagements on BBC Radio 3 and televison and radio stations in America and Europe. Recently released are Denoyé - Corrette d’après Vivaldi, Hommages with Le Parlement de Musique under Martin Gester on Ambronay Éditions, Claudio Monteverdi L'Orfeo with The Taverner Consort & Players under Andrew Parrott and “Las Ciudades de Oro” with L’harmonie des Saisons under Eric J. Milnes. Most recently released are Campra Cantatas with Canzona on the Etcetera label, Sacred Songs of Sorrow and his latest recording Esperar, Sentir, Morir with Charivari Agréable on the Signum label.
