I have just joined the Bach Cantatas website, having been a reader of it for many years. I fell in love with Bach's cantatas back in the 1960s when I bought an LP of the Actus Tragicus on the Das Alte Werk label (Gustav Leonhardt et.al.) I was blown away by this extraordinary sound world. From then on I was hooked, not only on Bach's cantatas, but on the then burgeoning HIP movement. Nowadays I can enjoy both the traditionalist performances (Karl Richter a particular favourite) and the so-called historically- informed school.

Thanks for reading

Introducing myself

Lavish Absence wrote (August 30, 2023):
I am a new member and am really enjoying the vast amount of info on the site. I have come to Bach’s Cantatas much later in life than I would have liked but am deeply immersed in them now and thanks to this site am gaining some knowledge about them. I think my initial approach was to sample the different complete cycles that had been recorded. Didn’t really care much about HIP or non HIP just wanted to hear the different approaches and decide what I liked. One set that I kept returning to was the Rilling. Then I kind of drifted for awhile not being particularly moved by anything. There was some great performances but nothing was really connecting with me. Some like Suzuki whilst impeccably done felt distancing and cold to me. It was becoming a bit clinical. Then only recently I heard a Koopman recording of the solo cantatas for bass. I thought this much more interesting. So I ended up here on the site exploring your table of cantatas sorted by bass, alto, tenor etc. This in turn lead to me discovering older recordings by Hotter and Fischer Dieskau that were recommended and now I’m well and truly hooked! Vandernoot and Winschermann are now in my playlists and my passion for the cantatas are reignited. What a fabulous site this is and I hope to spend many hours here reading the thoughtful insights of those far more learned in Bach than myself.

[To Lavish Absence] Sounds as if you have become quite learned!

[To Jeffrey Solow] Well the site is helping me no end.At least as far as the Cantata recordings go. So many great suggestions for recordings by members! Tracking sone of them down can be a challenge especially some of the older recordings. I’ve read the recordings thread completely. Several years worth of posts.
