German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

Weiß aber nicht, ob ich den Morgen möchte erleben;

1. The hour is come, O Lord, to lay me down in sleep:
The weary body droops, dark shadows round me creep.
Perchance, another dawn Thou from mine eyes withholdest,
And e'er the morning breaks to die my spirit callest.

2. Drum sag ich dir, o Gott, von Herzen Lob und Dank;
Ich will auch solches tun hinfort mein Leben lang,
Weil Du mich diesen Tag hast wollen so bewahren,
Dass mir kein Unglück hat können wiederfahren.

2. So, lowly on my knees, I give Thee thanks and praise
For all the loving care that's kept me all my days.
And yet another's past, so hallowed by Thy blessing;
No ill has dared intrude, my peaceful life distressing,.

5. And so, if Thou dost will this night to call me home,
In heaven to sing Thy praise, I ready am to come.
But help me so to die, upon Thy grace relying,
That swift my soul to Thee may heasanward be flying.

Auf dass ich seliglich und sanft von hinnen scheide;
Dann führe meine Seel hinauf zur Himmels-Freude.
