Johann Georg Schübler (Engraver, Organ, Bach's Pupil)

Born: c17201 4 or c17253 - Zella, Thuringia, Germany
Died: after 1755

Johann Georg Schübler was a German engarver and organist, who belonged to the Schübler family of artisians from Zella in the Turingian forrest. Their stock-in-trade was iron cutting, the incising of ornamental designs on gun barrels, trivets, and the like. The incising method used was closely related to the Abklatsschvorlage method employed by the family, in their music engraving. hae was born the son of Johann Heinrich Schübler (rifle butcher, lieutenant, rifle dealer in Zella). J.G. Schübler studied privately with J.S. Bach in Leipzig at the beginning of the 1740's and became an organist and schoolteacher in Mehlis. Schübler is known as the engraver of the "Sechs Choräle von verschiedener Ari..." (BWV 645-650) " In Verlegung Joh. Georg Schübler zu Zella am Thüringer Walde. The remarkable organ piece seems to be the only extant work by Schübler. E.L. Qerber mentions further that III organ trios for two manuals and pedal on: Meine Seele lass es gehen, were known in Mst. He also assisted J.S. Bach with the engraving of the Musical Offering (BWV 1079). In 1747-1753 he is documented as publisher and engraver in Zella; from 1755 substitute for the organist Johann Nikolaus Tischer (B-31) in Schmalkalden?; Further whereabouts unknown.

Johann Georg Schübler's lessons with J.S. Bach are evidenced by the (auto-) biography of his brother Johann Heinrich Schübler, which is available in two versions. There it is said that J.G. Schübler "die Music in Leipzig bey dem berühmten Bach gelernet" (learned the music in Leipzig at the famous Bach), or that he "sich selbst in Leipzig beym berühmten Bach noch mehr in der Music perfectioniret" (perfected himself even more in music with the famous Bach). After leaving Leipzig, Schübler, J.S. Bach and his sons remained connected as publishers and engravers.
