Gottfried Kirchhoff (Composer)
Born: September 15, 1685 - Mühlbeck, near Bitterfeld (about 30 km north-east of Halle), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany Died: January 21, 1746 - Halle, Germany
The German composer, Gottfried Kirchhoff, was, like Georg Frideric Handel, a pupil of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow (1663-1712). He was Kapellmeister of the Duke of Holstein-Glücksburg in 1709; organist of the Benedictine Church in Quedlinburg in 1711; and succeeded F.W. Zachow as organist of the Liebfrauenkirche (Marktkirche) in Halle (a post that J.S. Bach had declined) from July 13, 1714, and remained there until his death. Gottfried Kirchhoff wrote mainly vocal music and organ pieces for church use. He was one of the foremost organ composers of the 18^th century. He may have been the composer of two Fantasias & Fughettas for keyboard attributed to J.S. Bach (BWV 907-908) on evidence which is not altogether reliable. List of works in Q.-L.
