The German music pedagogue, composer and a pianist, Peter Heilbut, originated from a Jewish family. Surviving the KZ Saxony, he studied music in Hamburg from 1945.
After finishing successfully his studies, Peter Heilbut got in 1952 a post as piano teacher at the Staatlichen Jugendmusikschule Hamburg, which he held until 1985. From 1975 to 1990 he taught also at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg. In 1998 the city of Hamburg honoured him with medal of science and art.
As a pedagogue Peter Heilbut published numerous writings on music teaching, piano schools and collections of contemporary music for instruction. As a composer his emphasis lay likewise in the range of educational literature. Many of his publications were considered in the curricula and still rank today among the standard of the instruction literature. |
