Lothar Graap (Composer)

Born: June 15, 1933 - Schweidnitz, the Prussian province of Silesia, Germany (now in Poland)

The German composer and church musician, Lothar Graap, studied from 1949 at the Konservatorium in Görlitz and from 1950 at the Kirchenmusikschule Görlitz. After four years of studies , including with Eberhard Wenzel (music theory) and Hans Schneider (organ), he passed the church music-B exam. After the exam, he attended other courses with Helmut Bornefeld and Siegfried Reda.

Lothar Graap worked from 1954 as a church musician in Niemegk, then he was until his retirement Kantor and organist at the Klosterkirche in Cottbus. In 1975, he was awarded the status of A-Kantor, and in 1981 he was appointed Church Music Director (KMD). In 1991 he was a lecturer in organ playing at the Konservatorium in Cottbus. For his work Graap was awarded in 1998 the Medal of Honor by the city of Cottbus. He now lives in Schoneiche.

Lothar Graap wrote numerous compositions that are rooted primarily in worship and are determined by the word of the Bible. His compositions are strongly influenced by his teacher Eberhard Wenzel and Paul Hindemith. He is a member of the group of composers and lyricists - TAKT.
