Johann Dilliger (Composer)

Born: November 30, 1593 - Eisfeld by Hildburghausen, Thuringia, Germany
Died: August 28, 1647 - Coburg, Germany

The German minister and composer, Johann Dilliger [Dillinger], was a son of Hofschmieds. He attended the Latin school in Eisfeld, and since 1611 studied music in Magdeburg as a pupil of the Wolfenbuetteler Hofkapellmeisters Michael Praetorius. In 1618 he went to Wittenberg to study of theology and became there in 1618 Kantor at the Haupt- und Schloßkirche. He finished his studies with the Magister D, and in 1625 followed a call to serve at the Kirchen- und Stadtschule in Coburg. In 1633 he became a minister in Gellershausen, returned however one year later to Coburg as Diakon at St. Moritz. His life were loaded by the frights and hardships of the Thirty Years War, hunger, emergency and plague, heavy illnesses and deaths in the family. In 1641 his wife died at the age of 44 years after giving birth to their 12th child.
