History & Mission: |
J.S. Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Germany and baptized two days later at St. George’s Lutheran Church. On the occasion of the 325th anniversary of the birthday of this great composer, a variety of singers and instrumentalists from Holy Cross and guest artists will combine to present a series of J.S. Bach works in a spirit of celebration.
Most appropriately, the opening work for the morning will be choral cantata BWV 80 based on the chorale by Martin Luther "Ein feste Burg." The Brandenburg Concerto #2 and the famous Toccata & Fugue in D Minor for organ will follow. Additional pieces on the program will be the double concerto for violin and oboe and the solo cantata BWV 82 “Ich habe genug.” Commentary will also be offered to enhance the proceedings.
Members of the congregation are encouraged to stay from 9:30 am to noon to experience our Bachfest, but breaks in the program will allow listeners to come and go as they please. Included in the activities will be our customary Sunday morning children’s sermon, a congregational hymn or two, and other essential parts of a service. |
