History & Mission: |
In 1968 as Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, NYC marked its 100th birthday, it set out to celebrate its history and the rich tradition of music in the Lutheran Church. Drawing from the high level of music performance in NYC, "Evenings with Johann S" was established based on the German service of Vespers for which the great Lutheran composer J.S. Bach prepared and rendered so many of his cantatas. It was the first series of its kind in the western hemisphere.
Now in its 54th Season [2021-2022], Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity continues to present Bach’s cantatas and other great masterworks in the context of traditional Lutheran Evening Prayer services. The Bach Choir, Soloists and Bach Players (on Baroque period instruments) are composed of professional musicians from the New York region and are directed by Director of Music Anthony Blake Clark. Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity has been named "A Cultural Landmark" by the New York Landmarks Conservancy, and has been the recipient of two Grammy nominations. |
