Phoebe Wu (Piano)

Born: Northern California, USA

The American pianist and music teacher, Phoebe Wu, studied with John McCarthy in San Francisco. In addition to playing piano, she also grew up playing saxophone and tap dancing. She is a graduate of University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. Her principal teacher was Logan Skelton. In addition, she studied dance accompaniment with Christian Matijas-Mecca, vocal and instrumental collaboration with Katherine Collier, and harpsichord with Joseph Gascho.

hoebe Wu is a pianist dedicated to bringing new works to life through collaborations with composers, musicians, dancers, choreographers, and performance artists. She currently teaches piano at Los Gatos School of Music and freelances in the San Francisco Bay Area. She aims to keep the focus on gratitude and joy in all her musical endeavors.

Recently happenings include teaching and accompanying at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp in Sitka, Alaska for the Middle School, High School, and Musical Theater sessions; performing as the pianist of the ÆPEX Contemporary Performance Residency at Central Michigan University with composer Evan Ware; presenting the empowerment-focused I Will Learn To concert at Oakland University in Michigan and University of Windsor in Ontario; and a West Coast premiere of Three Truths by Jacob Rogers at the Hot Air Music Festival held at San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Phoebe Wu attended Yarn/Wire's Summer Institute and Eighth Blackbird’s inaugural summer festival Blackbird Creative Lab. She has worked with many artists including Jennifer Higdon, Viet Cuong, Evan Ware, Sebastian Zel, and Amy Petrongelli; mentors Ning Yu, Laura Barger, Michael Maccaferri, Matthew Duvall, and Joseph Gramley; and director/choreographer Mark DeChiazza. She is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
