Johan Wållberg (Baritone)

Born: Sweden

The Swedish basritone, Johan Wållberg, studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main and the University College of Opera in Stockholm.

Johan Wållberg is a much appreciated concert and oratorio singer and has also performed in opera productions at the Royal Swedish Opera, Malmö Opera, Drottningholms Slottsteater, Wermland Opera and Opera på Skäret. In 2000, he made his debut in the Vadstena Academy Production of Zander and Envall’s Kopparslagaren. He has appeared in Martin y Soler’s opera La Capricciosa Coretta at the Drottningholm Court Theatre, The Royal Opera’s production of Verdi’s Don Carlos and Jahnkeoperans Miss Julie at the Intimate Theatre in Stockholm.

Johan Wållberg was engaged during three seasons at Opera på Skäret - in 2007 and 2009 he was in a production of Kronofogdarne och Slåtterölet and in the summer of 2008 he sang Il Sagrestano and Sciarrone in Tosca. At the Wermland Opera he performed the part of Monterone in Rigoletto 2009-2010 and in 2012 he starred in J.S. Bach's St John’s Passion (BWV 245), and the children’s opera Three Little Pigs, as the Big Bad Wolf.

With the Nordic Chamber Opera Johan Wållberg has performed as Captain Hook in Peter Pan (2012) Emperor of China in the Nightingale (2013) and Per Anger in The Missing of Raoul Wallenberg (2014). Among recent highlights can be mentioned Belcore in L’elisir d’amore at Opera på Skäret and Archon in The Greek Passion by Martinú at Wermland Opera. He also participated in the contemporary opera Det går an by Sundqvist and Fjellström at Läckö Slott and at Malmö Opera, as Il Sagrestano in Tosca at Opera Østfold in Norway and with the title role in the new opera, Boris Christ at the Piteå Chamber Opera.

Johan Wållberg is often engaged as a concert and oratorio soloist and has performed with choirs and orchestras in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Germany. Major works are Johannes BrahmsRequiem, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), B Minor Mass (BWV 232), St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and St. John Passion (BWV 245). His Concert repertoire also includes Winterreise by Schubert, Dichterliebe by Robert Schumann, Allan Pettersson Barfotasånger and Kung Eriks visor by Ture Rangström.
