Haruo Uesugi (Piano)

Born: 1967 - Japan

The Japanese pianist and physician, Haruo Uesugi (Japanese: 上杉 春雄), started to play the piano at the age of 5, and began his concert activity at the age of 11 including playing concertos with orchestra. His musical accomplishments even in his early years are brilliant and distinguished. After he received first prizes in several domestic piano competitions, he went, in 1981 at the age of 14, on a successful concert tour in USA. Further, he won a medal at Maria Canals International Competition in Barcelona in 1986, and won prizes in other international competitions.

Haruo Uesugi started his career as a concert pianist again after he entered the medical school. He had experience in solo concerts at many major concert halls including Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Osaka Symphony Hall in Japan, as well as other domestic and international venues. He also has played with many major orchstras in Japan such as Fuda Hibiki, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Yomiuri Nikko, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa,. Further, he played in hospital concerts for patients as well and the NHK, Japanese national broadcasting company, broadcast a documentary program about one of such concerts.

After a 12 years’pause due to his medical career, Haruo Uesugi restarted his music activity in 2003. He had played with famous domestic and foreign musicians, such as Akiko Suwanai (winner at Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1990), Michie Nakamaru, Yoshiko Kawamoto, Mari Fujiwara, Adalbert Skocic, T. Jamnik, Maki Mori (soprano), Michio Kobayashi, Jörg Demus, Akiko Suwanai (violin), Sara, Mutsumi Hatano (mezzo-soprano), Maki Nakamaru, and G. Sima (former singer of the Vienna State Opera). He also played in Croatia with the violist Wladimir Kossjanenko (Professor in the Concervatoire in Split, Croatia) in 2009. He has been co-starring with the violinist Tomoko Maeda since 2012. He had studied piano with Tadashi Kitagawa, Kazuoki Fujii, Joseph Dichler, Jörg Demus and Pavel Gililov, and vocal accompaniment with Katarina Mikami and Martin Katz. Furthermore, he devoted himself to studying the harpsichord with Yoshio Watanabe.

Haruo Uesugi debuted on CD from EMI at the age of 20. Some of his works so far have been published in four CD's from EMI Japan. In recent years, he has continued his research on J.S. Bach performances, and both 2011 "Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier Vol. 1" (BWV 846-869) and 2018 "Bach: Goldberg Variations" (BWV 988) have become special editions in Record Art magazine. The latter was also nominated for the 2018 Record Academy Awards. In addition, the concert with Yoshiko Kawamoto of viola was listed in "Concert Best Ten 2018" (Ongaku no Tomo Magazine). As a medical doctor, Haruo Uesugi studied at Hokkaido University School of Medicine and worked as a neurologist for several years. Then he studied at the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo and Uppsala University Hospital (Department of Clinical Neurophysiology) in Sweden. . At the same time, he is now a certificated physician by the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine and an authorized neurologist by Japanese Society of Neurology. After working as a hospital director in Sapporo City and a clinical professor at Sapporo Medical University, he is currently working at a hospital in Sapporo City.
