John Tobin (Conductor, Musicologist)
Born: 1891 - Liverpool, England Died: 1980
The English conductor, musicologist and composer, John Tobin, studied music privately and got Music Master from the Liverpool College (1916-1918). John Tobin taught at the Holt School from 1918 to 1926. In 1926-1927 he was conductor of the British National Opera Company. From 1935 to 1939 he was Director of Music at Toynbee Hall in London. From 1940 to 1945 he was conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and in 1946 he was conductor of the London Choral Society. Compositions: Song Cycles; Art Songs; Choral Works; Pianoforte Pieces; Volumes of Educational Songs; Edited: The Messiah Volume in the new Hallische Handelausgabe. Published: Handel at Work (Cassell London, St. Martins Press New York). Specialities: Georg Frideric Handel's Messiah, a critical account of the manuscript sources and printed editions (Cassell, St. Martins Press), The Interpretation of 18^th Century Music & Vocal Techniques & Interpretation. Hobbies: mountain walking (snow & ice). John Tobin was married with Isabel Moss and had two daughters.
