Bryden Thomson (Conductor)

Born: July 16, 1928 - Ayr, Scotland, UK
Died: November 14, 1991 - Dublin, Ireland

The Scottish conductor, Bryden Thomson, studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow and at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg, his principal mentors being Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and Igor Markevitch.

Bryden Thomson was assistant conductor of the BBC Scottish Orchestra from 1958 to 1962, and associate conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra in Glasgow from 1966 to 1958. From 1968 to 1973 he was principal conductor of the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra in Manchester; and from 1977 to 1985 he was Music Director of the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast. He also was principal conductor of the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra in Cardiff (1978-1982) and the R(adio) T(elefis) E(ireann) Symphony Orchestra in Dublin (1984-1987). In 1988 he returned to the Scottish National Orchestra as its principal conductor, becoming well known for his championship of British music.
