Lenka Škorničková (Soprano)

Born: Prague, Czech Republic

The Czech soprano, Lenka Škorničková, studied at the Conservatoire and Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. She was a member of the Opera Studio of the National Theatre and performed in opera houses in Prague and in the opera house in Liberec whilst she was a student. She made her opera début as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute when she was only twenty years old. She took part in several national and international singing competitions and always reached the finals. Taking part in the Grimsby International Competition for Singers in 1989 resulted in her winning two prizes. It was also the first time that the English Song Award had been won by a non-English singer.

In addition to opera, Lenka Škorničková became well known as an interpreter of early music and performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe. Her experience singing opera and early music, and working closely together with the excellent pianist Jitka Drobilková inspired her to study songs and as a duo they have given many highly acclaimed recitals. Several song cycles were written especially for Lenka's voice by prominent Czech composers; apart from those she also performs other works of contemporary music. Lenka has studied with eminent singing teachers in several countries and now she receives requests to coach students herself.

Lenka Škorničková has taken a part in several CD recordings, worked for many international radio and television companies and besides giving concerts Lenka sings as a guest in various opera productions.
