Marie Lys (Soprano)

Born: Lausanne, Switzerland

The Swiss soprano, Marie Lys, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music - Voice of from the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne with a Prize for the best recital (2010-2012). Since September 2012, she studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2014, before joining their International Opera School, graduating in July 2016 with an Artist Diploma in Opera. She won twice the Concours de chant du Pour-cent culturel Migros, and she received the support of the Leenaards, Irène Dénéréaz, Colette Mosetti and Friedl Wald Foundations, and of both the Drake Calleja and Josephine Baker Trusts. She is a Samling Artist. She is First prize winner of the Competition for Baroque Opera Cesti 2018 and of the Concours International de Belcanto Vincenzo Bellini 2017, and recipient of the Audience Prizes at the Concours de chant de Toulouse 2019 and at the London Handel Singing Competition 2016.

Marie Lys has sung with great artists such as Dmitry Sinkovsky, Fabio Biondi, Maxim Emelyanychev, Dorothee Oberlinger, Diego Fasolis, Alessandro De Marchi, Michel Corboz, Laurence Cummings, Christian Curnyn, Robert King and Daniel Reuss in many festivals including Ambronay, Göttingen, Halle, La Folle Journée, Verbier, MITO and Utrecht. Performance venues include Wigmore Hall, Buckingham Palace and Kings Place (London), Auditorio Nacional de Música (Madrid), Sociedad Filarmónica (Bilbao), Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon), Casa da Música (Porto), Tokyo International Forum and Yomiuri Otemachi Hall (Tokyo). She has performed with orchestras such as Europa Galante (Director: Fabio Biondi), Les Talens Lyriques (Director: Christophe Rousset), Sinfonia Varsovia, The English Concert, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and Cameristi della Scala.

On the operatic stage Marie Lys performed the roles of Adelaide in Lotario at the Konzert Theater Bern and Göttingen International Handel Festival, Dalinda in George Frideric Handel's Ariodante at the London Handel Festival, Galatea in Acis and Galatea at the Opéra de Massy, Lisa in La Sonnambula, Adele in Die Fledermaus and L’Amour in Orphée et Eurydice at the Opéra de Lausanne, Cleopatra in G.F. Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the Bury Court Opera, Servilia in W.A. Mozart in La Clemenza di Tito, Yniold in Pelléas et Mélisande and Clorinda in La Cenerentola at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.

In 2015 Marie Lys won the First Prize at the Göttinger Reihe Historischer Musik Competition with the Abchordis Ensemble, that she co-founded in 2011. Their two recordings, “Stabat Mater” and “Dies Irae”, were published by Sony DHM. For Naïve, she has recorded Antonio Vivaldi's long-lost opera Argippo under the baton of Fabio Biondi with Europa Galante (issued in November 2020, followed by a tour through Europe). Again with Fabio Biondi, she performs Bellezza in G.F. Handel's Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno in Granada and the title role in Donizetti’s opera buffa Betly for the Chopin and His Europe Festival in Warsaw.

Recent and future engagements include Dorinda in Orlando at the Festival Castell de Peralada in a new production by Rafael Villalobos, Ginevra in Ariodante at the Göttingen Handel Festival under Laurence Cummings, Morgana in G.F. Handel's Alcina and Sophie in Werther at the Opéra de Lausanne, Iris in Georg Philipp Telemann's Pastorelle en musique in Potsdam, Innsbruck and Bayreuth, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle in Utrecht and Amsterdam with Giulio Prandi, concerts with Leonardo García-Alarcón and Cappella Mediterranea in Ambronay and Dijon, a "Stabat Mater" programme with Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques in Norway and Germany, and the role of Euridice in Nicola Porpora's Orpheus at the Theater an der Wien with Dmitry Sinkovsky. With her ensemble Abchordis she also presents her new programme of unpublished Baroque opera arias written for Anna Maria Strada, of which a recording will be published soon.
