The American harpsichordist and organist, Arthur Haas, studied at the UCLA, receiving Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1969, and Master of Arts degree in Historical Musicology, UCLA in 1975 (Thesis: "The Chaconne and Passacaille in French Baroque Harpsichord Music."). He studied harpsichord with Alan Curtis in Berkeley and Amsterdam from 1972 to 1977, Kenneth Gilbert in Paris in 1976-1977 (master-classes), and Albert Fuller, the Juilliard School, New York in 1970-1971.
Arthur Haas is renowned throughout Europe and America as a peerless pedagogue and performer of Baroque and contemporary music. After receiving top prize in the 1975 Paris harpsichord competition, he remained in Paris from 1975 to 1983, performing in most major French early music festivals including le Festival Estival de Paris, Mai Musical de Bordeaux, and the Saintes Early Music Festival.
Arthur Haas made his formal debut recitals in New York (Alice Tully Hall, 1985), San Fransisco (1984), Boston (1984). He has appeared as a soloist in numerous European and American early music festivals including Festival Estival de Paris, Festival de Musique Ancienne de Saintes, Mai Musical de Bordeaux, Spectaculum (Vienna), Innsbruck Festwoche fur Alte Musik, Festival di Ascona, Dresdner Festspiele, Mostly Mozart (New York), Berkeley Music Festival. His partners for duo recitals and concerts with early music specialists include: Marius van Altena, Julianne Baird, James Bowman, Phoebe Carrai, William Christie, Alan Curtis, Bruce Dickey, Jan DeGaetani, Laurence Dreyfus, Paul Leenhouts, Judith Nelson, Paul O'Dette, Stephen Preston, and Marion Verbruggen. He played the premiere performance of William Albright's Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra at Eastman School of Music in 1994. Currently he is a member of The Aulos Ensemble, Musical Assembly, and Collegium Atlantis.
Praised by Le Monde for his interpretation of French keyboard music, Arthur Haas has recorded duo harpsichhord music of Gaspard LeRoux with William Christie, solo CD's of music by Jean-Henri d'Anglebert, Forqueray, and harpsichord music of the English Restoration.
Much in demand as a teacher, Arthur Haas is a faculty member of summer early music music institutes in Berkeley, Amherst, and the Longy School of Music; he has also taught at the Eastman School and at Stanford University. |
