Gürzenich-Orchester Köln (Orchestra)

The Gürzenich-Orchester Köln ranks among the prominent concert and opera orchestras of Germany. Its name refers to Gürzenich, the historical-representative Ballhaus of Köln, where the concerts took place from 1857 on. Numerous important works were premiered of by the Köln's orchestras, such as Johannes Brahms' Double Concerto, Gustav Mahler's 5^th Symphony or Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel. Since 1986 the ensemble is resident at the Kölner Philharmonie and gives there about 50 concerts annually. The Principal Conductor of the Gürzenich-Orchester since 2003 is Markus Stenz, who took over also the post of the head conductor of the Köln City in the 2004-2005 season.
