David Goode (Organ)

Born: 1971 - England

The English organist, composer and teacher, David Goode, was a music scholar at Eton College and then organ scholar at King’s College, Cambridge from 1991 to 1994, graduating with a first and the MPhil degree. While there he studied the organ with David Sanger and in Holland with Jacques van Oortmerssen.

From 1996 to 2001, David Goode, was Sub-Organist at Christ Church, Oxford and as such toured in Europe, the USA, Brazil and Japan and made several recordings. Having won the top prizes awarded at the 1997 St Alban’s Interpretation Competition, and the Recital Gold Medal at the 1998 Calgary Competition, he concentrated on a freelance career between 2001 and 2003. From 2003 to 2005, he combined a busy international career with the post of Organist-in-Residence at First Congregational Church, Los Angeles, home to the world’s largest church organ. Since 2005, he has been Organist and Head of Keyboard at Eton College, home to an important collection of historic instruments and some of the UK’s most talented young organists; he combines this with a concert career that takes him around the world.

In 1999, David Goode made the first of numerous appearances at the Proms: he gave a solo recital in 2006 and was a Featured Artist in 2011 with performances including Michael Berkeley’s Organ Concerto. He played at the Proms again in September 2015. In 2002 he made his Festival Hall and Symphony Hall debuts, and returned to both venues in 2014. He has toured widely in Europe, the USA and the Far East, and has forged a strong link with the BBCNOW and the BBC Singers. He also has an established partnership with the trumpeter Alison Balsom, with past concerts including the Moscow Arts, Three Choirs and Passau Festivals, and the Organ Gala Launch Concert at the Royal Festival Hall in March 2014. In 2016, he performed at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists.

David Goode is much in demand as a teacher, including for the RCO, and was on the jury for the St Albans International Organ Festival in 2017. In recent years he has composed a number of choral and organ works, including a collaboration with the poet Francis Warner; performances include those by the King's College Choir Cambridge and Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge. In September 2013 The Bach Choir and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under David Hill gave the premiere of his Blitz Requiem in St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Since his first solo CD, ‘French Showpieces from King’s’, recorded while still an undergraduate, David Goode's recordings have consistently received critical acclaim. Of his 2004 release from Los Angeles ‘The Great Organs of First Church Vol 2’, The American Organist said ‘David Goode shows a fearless command of one of the world’s largest church organs. A magisterial performance of Edwin H. Lemare’s transcription of Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger must be one of the finest renditions of this work on record’. 2004 also saw the first volume of a landmark project to record the complete organ works of Max Reger on 17 CD's (‘Finally, there’s a set…that competes with Germani’s 1960’s HMV recordings – I thought the day would never come’, Choir and Organ); a second volume appeared in 2013. He has also released discs of J.S. Bach from Freiberg and Parry from Eton. His recording of the complete organ works of J.S. Bach from Trinity College, Cambridge is currently being released on the Signum label, with Vol. 10 due for release this autumn (2018).
