Johannes Euler (Counter-tenor)

Born: Hannover, Germany

The German counter-tenor and vocal coach, Johannes Euler, received his first vocal training with Professor Charlotte Lehmann. From 2002 until 2006 he studied at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover in the programme “Institute for the Early Advancement of the Musically Highly Gifted”. During this time he received various prizes and scholarships in the national music competition “Jugend Musiziert”. After finishing school, he studied Vocal pedagogy and singing in Hannover (Master of Music) with his teachers Ralf Popken and Professor Markus Schäfer. His studies were complemented through various coachings and master-classes in singing, pedagogy and ensemble singing, among others with Evelyn Tubb, Anthony Rooley, Maria Husmann, Peter Kooij, Michael Chance and The King's Singers.

Johannes Euler gave his operatic debut 2013 in Georg Philipp Telemann's Der aus der Löwengrube errettete Daniel at the theatre Osnabrück. Other opera performances include Oberon in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Tolomeo in George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto. One artistic focus of his current concert activity beside the traditional Baroque repertoire of his voice type is the music of the 20th and 21st century. Of great importance is his working relationship with composer Oscar Strasnoy, in whose opera Comeback he was part of the world premiere cast at the Staatsoper Berlin in 2016. In 2017 he also premiered Strasnoy’s oratorio Luther with the Staatskapelle Halle. Numerous other international composers have written for his voice, among others Hasan Uçarsu, Wilfried Hiller and Alfred Koerppen. In 2022 he made his debut at the International Bruckner Festival Linz as counter-tenor soloist in Alfred Schnittke’s second symphony St. Florian.

Since 2014 Johannes Euler is part of the internationally acclaimed German vocal ensemble “Die Singphoniker”. Regular tours have brought him to most European countries, as well as Japan and China. He has produced numerous CD's with the group which have been positively reviewed internationally.

In 2020 Johannes Euler founded the Ensemble “BEYOND”, which focuses on the relationship of both classical and baroque music with Jazz. In 2022 the first CD of the group “BEYOND:Dowland” was planned to be released. His recordings are regularly featured in German and Austrian Radio and Television. Guest appearances on NHK Japan compliment his artistic work.

As a voice teacher Johannes Euler focusses on preparing young singers for their auditions at German conservatories, as well as coaching single students and choirs in ensemble singing.o
