Edmon Colomer (Conductor)

Born: September 26, 1951 - Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

The Spanish conductor, Edmon Colomer, studied at at Indiana University. He often links his conducting career with music education. In 1983 the Spanish Ministry of Culture entrusted him the creation of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE) and in 2002 he was awarded “Chevalier dans l’ordre des palmes académiques” by the French Ministry of Culture.

Edmon Colomer has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Eastern Music Festival in the USA, the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea, the Orchestre de Picardie in France, the Orquestra Simfònica de Balears, the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga (since September 2010) in Spain. He has appeared as a guest with London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Opéra de Paris, Symphonique du Québec, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, National de Lyon, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, MDR Kammerphilharmonie, BSO Frankfurt, Sinfonica di Roma, Simón Bolívar, Puerto Rico or Malaysian Philharmonic, besides the best Spanish orchestras and opera houses. He has also directed the National Spanish Youth Orchestra. He appears regularly also on radio and television broadcasts in Europe, Australia, Japan, South Korea and North and South America.

Several Prizes and Awards have been granted to Edmon Colomer's extensive recording activity with the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, English Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Orchestre de Picardie, the Choeur Radio France and the BBC Symphony Chorus, released by Auvidis-Naïve, Assai, Harmonia Mundi, Calliope, Triton, Naxos, Ensayo, Virgin and Philips. De Falla's Atlàntida and El amor brujo, Gerhard's The Plague, Francis Poulenc's Organ Concerto, Leonard Bernstein's Serenade, or the DVD productions of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker by Béjart and Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with Paco de Lucía (1991) stand out as reference recordings. His catalogue also includes works by L.v. Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Gabriel Fauré, Alberto Ginastera, Guinjoan, Arthur Honegger, Milhaud, Weill, Balada, Nillni and Lavista.

In 2014 Edmon Colomer's will conduct new productions of La Cenerentola by Rossini at the Opéra de Toulon as well as Luigi Dallapiccola's Il Prigionero and Puccini's Suor Angelica at the Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona. Macbeth, Alban Berg's Wozzeck, W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Pasquale, Atlàntida, Picasso et la Danse or the Béjart Nutcracker stand as his most succesful opera and ballet productions in Europe and the USA. Sheldon Morganstern described Colomer as an "immensely gifted musician".
