Arthur Canguçu (Baritone)

Born: May 4, 1992 - Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil

The Brazilian baritone, Arthur Canguçu, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Singing from the State University of São Paulo (2011-2015). After graduating, he continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart, where he obtained his Master of Music degree in Opera in Teru Yoshihara's class (2015-2019).

As a sought-after concert soloist, Arthur Canguçu has performed in Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Guainaisʼ Alcaçuz-Messe, Camille Saint-Saënsʼ Oratorio de Nöel, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Schubert’s Mass in G major, as well as in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) and Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and various cantatas. He is also a member of Solistenensemble Stimmkunst (Director: Kay Johannsen).

Arthur Canguçu made his debut as Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte during his studies and also took on the roles of Schaunard in La Bohème, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Schlémil in Hoffmanns Erzählungen, among others. He also appeared at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as Ottokar in Der Freischütz (November 2019), at the Kiel Theater as Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia and at the Teatro Bradesco in São Paulo as Dancaïro in Georges Bizet's Carmen. At the Osterfestspielen Baden-Baden 2019 he sang the role of Mendelssohn in the world premiere of Victoria Bond's opera Clara (April 2019). In the 2019-2020 season he made his debut in the new production of Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti at the Staatsoper Stuttgart (July 2020). He currently lives in Stuttgart, Germany.
