Thierry Caens (Trumpet)

Born: 1958 - Dijon, Burgundy, France

The French trumpeter, Thierry Caens, began studying the trumpet at the age of 6 with his father Marcel Caens (also father of the saxophonist Jean-Pierre Caens) and then with Robert Pichaureau and Pierre Pollin. He entered the Conservatoire National Superior de Musique in Paris in the class of Maurice André, where he obtained in 1977 a 1st Prize of trumpet and in 1978 a 1st Prize of cornet.

In 1978, Thierry Caens was named solo trumpet of the Orchestre National de Lyon. In 1981 he became Cornet Solo of the Paris Opera Orchestra, a position that he has left in 1985. Meanwhile, he was awarded a bronze medal at the Geneva International Competition (1981). He played solo cornet at the Opéra Garnier in 1982. He is Artistic director of the Camerata de Bourgogne, Burgundy Chamber Orchestra, since 1987. He also played with Yves Henry and founded a trio with Michel Becquet and André Cazalet, soloist with the Orchestre de Paris.

A sought-after soloist, Thierry Caens is a guest of the world's greatest venues, from Victoria Hall in Geneva to Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, the USA, China, Italy and Paris (Salle Pleyel, Salle Gaveau, Radio France, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Théâtre du Châtelet, etc.). With Jean-François Paillard, he has recorded the main pages of J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel and J. Haydn. In chamber music, he has played with Jean-Pierre Wallez, Maurice André, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Jean-François Heisser, Paul Meyer, Dame Felicity Lott, Mareille Nordmann ... He is also a trumpet player of the organist Jean Guillou.

Thierry CAENS has been yet invited by prestigious orchestras: Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Israel Camerata Orchestra Jerusalem, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, Sapporo Symphony, Bremen Symphony, Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Orchestra of Ile de France, Orchestra Bernard Thomas, Orchester Lamoureux, National Orchestra of Toulouse, Orchestra Colonne, Capitole of Toulouse, Orchester National de Lyon, Orchestra of Grenade, Orchester Poitou-Charentes, of Savoie, L'Ensemble, Orchester d'Auvergne, Sofia Radio...

A great soloist, Thierry Caens is at the origin of many projects and arrangements. Extreme curiosity and openness characterize him. He is also known for his many participations with other musicians and likes to confront the most varied musical fields: Jazz with M. Solal, P. Caratini, A. Herve, D. Humair, Richard Galliano); Movies With M. Legrand, G. Yared, F. Talgorn, V.F. Cerrat, Jean Ferrat, Hf Thiefaine, Yves Jamait, F. Morel, JF (Vladimir Cosma, G. Delerue, M. Colombier, L. Schifrin), William Sheller Lalanne (on the album "Les Machines absurdes" issued in 2000); or world music with J.J. Mosalini, G. Beytelmann, R. Aubry, H. Agnel, Misia ... He has also played with Manuel Rocheman, Daniel Fernandez, and many others. He also played the solo trumpet part of more than 50 soundtracks, including Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano de Bergerac.

Thierry Caens has also founded the circus show "Le Piston Magique" at Sully sur Loire festival, with the circus company "Les Saltimbanques" and he has been the guest soloist of the theater company "Les 26000 Couverts". He is a founding member (1976) of the "Concert Arban" with Jean-Paul Leroy (trumpet teacher at the Orléans Conservatory); and the ensemble "Les Cuivres Francais", a large ensemble which brings together the soloists of the main French orchestras. He is also playing in trio with the horn player André Cazalet and the trombonist Michel Becquet. He has participated in numerous concerts with international bands: Spanish Brass, Belgium Brass, Ten of the Best, Euskadi, Lyon ONL ... He is also the creator of the "Copper Parades", popular events bringing together dozens of brass to parade in the main cities.

Thierry Caens is Professor at the Dijon Conservatory since 1985. He currently lives in Gevrey-Chambertin.
