James Bates (Conductor)

Born: USA

The American conductor, James Bates, earned his BM in organ performance at Susquehanna University and did graduate work in organ and choral conducting at the Yale School of Music. He received an MM degree in choral conducting from UNC-Greensboro, where he is currently enrolled as a doctoral student in choral conducting and early music.

James Bates has been director of the choral program at Salem College, as well as choir director at a number of churches in the Winston-Salem and Greensboro areas. He has done extensive work in early Moravian choral music and was director of the Moramus Chorale for 15 years. Currently he is Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Greensboro, where he also manages concerts and recitals, with emphasis on early music.
