Marta Adam (Contralto)
Born: Germany
The German contralto, Marta (or Martha) Adam, was born to a very musical family. To her ancestors belonged the composer Johann George Adam (1777-1833); her father was factory owner, her mother piano teacher. She studied from 1919 to 1924 at the Konservatorium of Leipzig, where she was pupil of Marie Hedmondt. Marta Adam dedicated herself in her career exclusively to the concert singing and became admitted as an oratorio and Lieder singer. She participated in the Bach Festivals of Essen and Leipzig, and often appeared in the Leipzig's Gewandhaus concerts. In the years 1922, 1923 and 1927 she undertook very successful Scandinavia tours. At that time she was member of the very well-known Rosenthal Vocal Quartet, together with the soprano Ilse Helling-Rosenthal, the tenor Hans Lißmann (later Anton Maria Topitz) and the bass and surgeon Dr. Wolfgang Rosenthal.
