Text for Cantata 144
Nimm, was dein ist, und gehe hin

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Nimm, was dein ist, und gehe hin.

Take what is yours and go.

2. ARIA (Alt)

Murre nicht,
lieber Christ,
wenn was nicht nach Wunsch geschicht;
sondern sei mit dem zufrieden,
was dir dein Gott hat beschieden,
er weiß, was dir nützlich ist.

Do not grumble
dear Christian
when what is wished is not delivered;
rather, be at peace with that
which God has allotted you,
he knows what is to your benefit.

3. CHORAL

Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
es bleibt gerecht sein Wille;
wie er fängt meine Sachen an,
will ich ihm halten stille.
Er ist mein Gott,
der in der Not
mich wohl weiß zu erhalten:
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.

Whatever God does, it is rightly done,
his will remains righteous;
however he commences with my concerns
I quietly wait upon him.
He is my God
who in distress
knows well how to preserve me;
thus I just let him prevail.

4. REZITATIV (Tenor)

Wo die Genügsamkeit regiert
und überall das Ruder führt,
da ist der Mensch vergnügt
mit dem, wie es Gott fügt.
Dagegen, wo die Ungenügsamkeit das Urtel spricht,
da stellt sich Gram und Kummer ein,
das Herz will nicht zufrieden sein,
und man gedenket nicht daran:
was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan.

Wherever contentment reigns
and everywhere steers the rudder,
there a person is at ease
with whatever God dispenses.
Conversely, where discontent casts judgment,
there grief and misery emerge,
the heart will not be at peace,
when one does not consider this:
whatever God does, is rightly done.

5. ARIA (Sopran)

Genügsamkeit
ist ein Schatz in diesem Leben,
welcher kann Vergnügung geben
in der größten Traurigkeit;
denn es lässet sich in allen
Gottes Fügung wohl gefallen
Genügsamkeit.

Contentment
is a treasure in this life,
which can provide pleasure
midst the greatest grief;
for all who are pleased
at God’s dispensation
receive contentment.

6. CHORAL

Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit,
sein Will, der ist der beste.
Zu helfen den'n er ist bereit,
die an ihn glauben feste.
Er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
und züchtiget mit Maßen.
Wer Gott vertraut, fest auf ihn baut,
den will er nicht verlassen.

What my God wills, may that always occur,
his will is for the best,
he is prepared to help those
who firmly believe in him.
He helps from distress, this devoted God,
and chastises in moderation:
whoever trusts in God, securely building on him,
will he not abandon.
