Your picks in 2003 (BCJ vol .23)

Bob Henderson wrote (December 19, 2003):
For Piotr and other Suzuki fans:
BIS websight announces Volume 23 of the Cantata cycle! Disc contains numbers 23, BWV 93, BWV 178 and BWV 107. Not yet available in the States.

Piotr Jaworski wrote (December 22, 2003):
[To Bob Henderson] Many thanks for keeping the list up-to-date about this fantastic project.

I'm sure that it will not surprise you that ... I already have this recording :-)

Little correction - the actual programme of volume 23 is as follows:
cantatas BWV 10 (!), BWV 93, BWV 107 and BWV 178.

And that is exactly the first work - altogether with the BWV 93 - that makes this recording really special and certainly worth of purchase. Among the soloists we know so well from that cycle (Nanoshita, Sakurada, Kooij) there is a newcomer - young Canadian countertenor - Matthew White. What always surprises me so much about Suzuki performances is that even quite mediocre works sound fresh, sound interesting, sound different than when rendered by others. Or maybe it is my personal positive bias ....

I won't be very original but this lovely aria "Herr, der du stark und machtig bist" from BWV 10 is such a gem here, that I simply can't stop listening over and over again.

And one amendment to my own list of 2003 Picks - one recording that - as far as I remember - went completely un-noticed here: Masaaki Suzuki complete "French Suites" (BIS 1113/1114). Best I ever heard.
