Christian Friedrich Gabler (Kantor, Bach's Pupil)

Born: October 1730 (baptised: October 13, 1730) - Klosterlausnitz, Thuringia, Germany
Died: February 23, 1800 - Schleiz, Thuringia, Germany

Christian Friedrich Gabler was born the son of Johann Christian Gabler (schoolmaster in Klosterlausnitz). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 12, 1748; studied there from 1748 to 1754, and was a J.S. Bach's pupil; and at Universität Leipzig from 1755 (enrolled on April 2, 1755). After his studies, he worked as worked as Hof- und Stadtkantor (court and city cantor) in Schleiz from 1757.

Christian Friedrich Gabler mentioned J.S. Bach as his teacher in an unsuccessful application for the Kantor office in Plauen in 1756, and not in connection with the Thomasschule and therefore related to private lessons. Furthermore, in 1772 the Schleiz school inspector Weyse said that he had heard a year ago that J.S. Bach had said about Gabler, "Daß von den vielen Scholaren, die er unter seiner Unterweisung gehabt, er fast kein geschickteres Subjectum angetroffen habe als diesen" (Of the many scholars he had had under his instruction, he had encountered almost no more clever subject than this). t is doubtful, however, that this corresponds to the facts. It still needs to be clarified from whom Weyse received this information.
