Jan De Winne (Flute)

Born: July 24, 1962 - Bruges, Belgium

The Belgian flautist, Jan De Winne, obtained his Master's degree in Flute and Chamber music from the Koninklijk Conservatorium Gent (1981-1986); and his Higher diploma in transverse flute from the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (1986-1991). Simultaneously, he obtained his Master's degree in History of Arts and Musicology Rijksuniversiteit Gent (1980-1986). He concentrated his studies on the Baroque transverse flute under Barthold Kuijken, completing them in 1991. He was finalist of the prestigious international early music competition in Bruges in 1987.

Jan De Winne has been a member of the Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe) and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées (Director: Philippe Herreweghe) for more than 15 years (1991-2006), and has performed with many other leading early music ensembles, including Il Fondamento (Director: Paul Dombrecht), Salzburger Barockorchester, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Director: Ton Koopman), Wiener Akademie (January 1990-January 2000), Les Agrémens (since January 2005), Mitteldeutsche Hofmusik (Director: Alexander Grychtolik), Gli Angeli Genève (Director: Stephan MacLeod). He then turned to a career as soloist and chamber musician. His passion for period instruments led him to make Baroque and classical flutes. In 1988, he founded the chamber music ensemble Il Gardellino with Marcel Ponseele, and since January 2000 he is Managing Director of this ensemble.

Jan De Winne has served at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles in several posts: Professor of Chamber Music early music department, artistic research (since October 2000), Professor of Baroque flute and performance practice (since January 2006); Head of the Early Music Department (HIPP) (since August 2017). He is also Professor of Baroque flute and Historical Performance Practice at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (since September 2004)

Jan De Winne was also Radio Producer at VRT KLARA in Brussels (January 1990–March 1993); Free lance radio programmer at VRT (March 1993-January 2001); Judge in the MA competition Bruges, on of the most important (and oldest!) competitions in the domain of the Early Music... (2002-2017); Member of the Board of Directors of the MA Festival, Brugge (since January 2008). His experience as an instrument maker of both Baroque and classical flutes provides him with an expertise on all the practical facets of the instrument.

Besides several chamber music programmes and concertos with Il Gardellino, Jan De Winne recorded J. Haydn trio's, Boismortier concertos, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach quartets, trios and sonatas for the labels Eufoda, Naxos, Unacorda and Accent. Since January 2006, he is also Artistic Director of Passacaille Records, an independent record label specialised in historically inspired performances covering a repertoire reaching from the early renaissance till the 20th century.
