Jean-Luc Thellin (Organ)

Born: Liège, Belgium

The Belgian organist and harpsichordist, Jean-Luc Thellin, is Professor of organ at the Conservatoire of Rayonnement (France-Chartres), at the conservatory of Melun (France) and professor of harpsichord in Sens (France).

Jean-Luc Thellin has won several international competitions. But he decided not to specialize in a single period of the history of music, thus he be heard performing both early and 20th-century music in passing by J.S. Bach and the Romantic era which allows him to be invited in international festivals throughout Europe as well as in North America, including the Spa ‘music autumn’, International Festival in Roquevaire (France), Oiva (Poland), "Toulouse en orgue" (France), Alkmaar (Netherlands), Notre-Dame in Paris (France), Liège Organ Festival (Belgium)…. He has a special passion for the organ works of J.S. Bach, César Franck and Maurice Duruflé whose complete works he played in concert many times. His most important aim is to make discover to his audience this brilliant Liege composer from the most different points of view. The will to discover the secrets of J.S. Bach is one of his priorities.

The second important point for Jean-Luc Thellin is improvisation: in his recitals as well as during the services, he is attributing an important part to improvisation whatever the style, allowing him to gather the parish members, other auditors and the organist himself in a special atmosphere perceptible for everyone and thus creating a sort of communication while taking into account the present emotions. For this feature, he has taken advice from our times best improvisers, Firmin Decerf und Thierry Escaich, learning from their experience and putting new impulses into practice.

In December 2007, at the commemoration of Louis Vierne’s 70th date of death he paid, in Notre Dame in Paris, a profound tribute to the composer and organist, improvising in the master’s style the final movement of a symphony. In June 2010, as a result of a previous competition, Jean-Luc Thellin, was appointed main organist on the Stolz-Organ in Notre-Dame Church in Vincennes (France). In 2018 he started working on a new recording of J.S. Bach’s complete organ works for Organroxx.

Jean-Luc Thellin taught improvisation at the organ in the Royal Conservatory of Liège (Belgium) as well as written harmony and basso continuo. Currently, he is Professor of Organ at Academie de Spa (since June 2003); Professor of Organ at Conservatoire de Melun (since September 2013); and Professor of Organ at Conservatoire de Chartres Funcionario in Centre-Val de Loire (since September 2018).
