Kyu-Young Kim (Violin, Conductor)

Born: East Patchogue, New York, USA

The American volinist and conductor, Kyu-Young Kim, received his degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music (Violin, Class of 1990), The Juilliard School of Music in New York (1991-1996), and Cleveland Institute of Music,. He and has studied with Donald Weilerstein, Robert Mann, Jaime Laredo, Yumi Scott and Shirley Givens..

Artistic Director and Principal Violin of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Kyu-Young Kim is one of the most versatile and accomplished musicians of his generation. His appointment as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Artistic Director in January 2016 marks the first time a playing member has been tapped to take the artistic helm of a major American orchestra. Previously, he erved as Director of Artistic Planning with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra while continuing to perform in the orchestra. Since assuming his dual role in 2013, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra has named seven new Artistic Partners, opened its new Concert Hall at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts to great critical acclaim, toured throughout the USA and to Europe, and won a Grammy Award in 2018 for its disc of Schubert's Death and the Maiden with violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune for his “flawless musical and technical command”, Kim has toured throughout North America, Europe and Asia, performing in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Seoul Arts Center, the Palais des Beaux Arts (Brussels), and the Beethoven-Haus (Bonn). He has also toured throughout the world as a founding member of the Daedalus Quartet with whom he won the Grand Prize at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition, he performed in many of the major halls of Europe, including the Musikverein (Vienna), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Philharmonie (Cologne), the Cité de la Musique (Paris), the Mozarteum (Salzburg), the Festpielhaus (Baden-Baden), and the Megaron (Athens). He was a member of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Two Program. As a former member of the Pacifica String Quartet, he won the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award. He has appeared as soloist with the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Amadeus Chamber Orchezstra of Poland and Bloomington Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as guest concert-master of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, and is an Emeritus Member of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He currently lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
