The Brazilian conductor, Marcelo de Jesus, has a degree in composition and conducting from UNESP (Class of 1995).
Marcelo de Jesus is one of Brazil's most active conductors. After years of performing at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo (1993-2000) and Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (2000-2003) as a pianist and assistant conductor to some of Brazil's most renowned maestros (1993-2003), he was invited by Maestro Luiz Fernando Malheiro to become principal conductor of the Orquestra de Câmara do Amazonas and deputy conductor of the Amazonas Filarmônica.
Marcelo de Jesus' repertoire includes numerous opera performances and concerts by a wide range of composers, with several notable premieres of new and old works, such as Poranduba (E. Villani-Côrtes), Kawah Ijen (João Guilherme Ripper), and Yerma (Heitor Villa-Lobos). His performances with the Ópera da Colômbia and with the Amazonas Filarmônica, Orquestra Experimental de Repertório, Orquestra Sinfônica de Sergipe, Orquestra Sinfônica do Espírito Santo, Sinfônica de Rosário, Milano Classica, Orquestra Sinfônica do Theatro da Paz, Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de Campinas, Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás, and Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira as guest conductor are noteworthy.
In 2016, at "Rock in Rio," Marcelo de Jesus conducted the "Amazonia Live" concert with Plácido Domingo and Ivete Sangalo. In 2017, he participated in the Lyric Season of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro with the operas Jenufa by Leos Janacek and Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. In 2018, he participated in the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de Campinas's Concert Season, with one of the concerts dedicated entirely to the works of composer Carlos Gomes. That same year, he was honored with the title of Citizen of Amazonas by the Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Amazonas. In 2019, at the 22nd Festival Amazonas de Ópera, he gave the national premiere of Gaetano Donizetti's Maria Stuarda and Claudio Santoro's Alma, a production voted the best opera of 2019 by the public and critics of Revista Concerto. In addition to the concerts in the "Guaraná" and "Encontro das Águas" series, he participated in the Orquestra Sinfônica do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro's Concert Season with an entire program of works by Claudio Santoro. He also led the Orquestra Sinfônica do Espírito Santo with the concert " Perfeição Clássica – A Primeira Escola de Viena."
In 2021, at the 23rd Festival Amazonas de Ópera, Marcelo de Jesus conducted the premieres of Eduardo Frigatti's O Corvo, Fernando Riederer's Duas Flores, Tatiana Catanzaro's L’attente, and Paulina Łuciuk's Ária dos Olhos. Opening the 24th Festival Amazonas de Ópera, he conducted Giacomo Puccini's Il Tabarro, inaugurating the Corredor Lírico do Norte. Also in 2022, as a guest conductor, he conducted Alberto Nepomuceno's Artemis and Francisco Braga's Jupyra at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. In 2023, at the 25th Festival Amazonas de Ópera, he conducted the first Brazilian production of Gaetano Donizetti's Anna Bolena. He performed a concert with the Orquestra de Câmara do Amazonas featuring works by Russian composers, and performed as pianist in the gala recital celebrating Maria Callas's 100th birthday. In 2023, he guest-conducted the Sinfônica de Campinas, Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, and Sinfônica da UFRJ, as well as the Amazonas Filarmônica and Orquestra de Câmara do Amazonas.
Director of the Corpos Artísticos from 2011 to 2020, Marcelo de Jesus currently serves as Artistic Consultant for the Secretaria de Cultura e Economia Criativa do Amazonas (since March 2019). He currently lives in Manaus, Brazil. |
