Thomas Haverkamp (Choral Conductor, Organ)

Born: 1993 - Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

The German choral conductor, organist and church musician, Thomas Haverkamp, was born into an old family of church musicians. He received his first piano lessons at the age of 6 and was a multiple prize-winner at "Jugend musiziert" as a child. At the age of 19 he began organ lessons with Wolfgang Abendroth and passed the C church musician exam. After graduating from high school, he completed a voluntary social year in culture at the Johanneskirche Stadtkirche in Düsseldorf. He studied Protestant church music at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf (2015-2021). His teachers there include cathedral organist Sebastian Küchler-Blessing (organ), cathedral organist Stefan Schmidt (liturgical organ playing/improvisation), Boguslaw Strobel (piano) and Steffen Schreyer (choral conducting). Further studies led him to Johannes Geffert and Martin Schmeding. In 2016, he won the 3rd Internationalen Wettbewerb für Orgel und Gesang 2016 in Neuss together with the mezzo-soprano Stephanie Lesch (2nd prize ex aequo if the 1st prize was not awarded). Since September 2022, he studies at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Thomas Haverkamp was the assistant to Kantor Wolfgang Abendroth at the Johanneskirche Stadtkirche in Düsseldorf (2013-2020). First concerts lad him through the Rhineland, to Helgoland and to the Essen Cathedral. Then he was church musician at Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Kettwig (January 2020-September 2022). He currently lives in Lörrach.
