Ulrich Bremsteller (Choral Conductor, Organ)

Born: 1937 - Breslau, Germany

The German choral conductor and oprganist, Ulrich Bremsteller, was born in Breslau in 1937. His family moved to Magdeburg in 1947, where his father Gerhard Bremsteller was appointed as Landeskirchenmusikdirektor and conductor of the Magdeburger Domchor. At the age of 9, Ulrich Bremsteller became choirmaster in the Magdeburger Dom (Cathedral of Magdeburg) and later cathedral prefect. He received his first and formative organ lessons from his father in the years 1951 to 1955. Subsequently, he studied music at the Hochschule für Musik Leipzig with Günther Ramin and Robert Köbler (organ, organ improvisation), Kurt Thomas and Heinz Rögner (choir, orchestra).

From 1958 to 1960 Ulrich Bremsteller held the office of the cathedral organist in Magdeburg. He then moved to West Berlin, where he held several organist positions, and in 1972 finally conductor and organist at St. Marien in Flensburg, where he directed the Flensburger Bach-Chor. In 1975 he received a call as a full Professor for Protestant church music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater (HFMT) in Hannover. Among his pupils: Arvid Gast, Gerhard Luchterhandt, Martin U. Sander, Martin Schmeding, Ulfert Smidt.

In 1977, Ulrich Bremsteller founded the Capella St. Crucis. Under his direction, the choir quickly developed into an ensemble, which bribed through high tonal quality. The choir quickly developed into a nationally recognized choir. Numerous oratorio performances and a cappella concert as well as radio recordings characterize the choir He continued to directhe choir until 2000, succeeded by Manuel Doormann. In August 1992, he took over the position of titular organist of the concert hall "Georg Philipp Telemann" in the Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen Magdeburg, which he laid down after 16 years of intensive efforts to ensure the well-being of this instrument in June 2008. Numerous concert tours have made him known far beyond Europe.
